Staff Designer
Job Description
Job Title: Staff Designer
Department: R&D
Location: Hybrid in the Lehigh Valley, PA, or fully remote
Position Summary
Our client, a contract medical device manufacturer, is hiring a Staff Designer to provide CAD support, help develop intellectual property, and build out the structure of the company's design systems. The role sits at the Staff level of the Designer track: no engineering degree required, and experience matters more than credentials. It can be hybrid in the Lehigh Valley, PA or fully remote.
Primary Responsibilities
The Staff Designer supports new product development and sustaining work across the R&D team, with three focus areas: CAD support, IP development, and system structure.
· Create and maintain 3D part files, assemblies, and 2D technical drawings in CAD, typically SolidWorks, for surgical implants and instruments.
· Support IP development by preparing design documentation and CAD data that engineers use for new concepts and enhancements.
· Help set up and maintain the structure of the company's CAD systems, including file organization, templates, and naming and revision practices.
· Review drawings and support design control activities in line with the company's quality management system.
· Work with project and design engineers to turn requirements into production-ready designs, and respond to feedback from suppliers and manufacturing.
· Support both NPD and sustaining projects, managing several tasks at once.
· Follow organizational guidelines, procedures, and protocols, and keep project teams aware of milestones and issues.
Secondary Responsibilities
· Help train and mentor Designers and Sr. Designers on CAD practices.
· Support the Operations, Quality, and Regulatory teams as needed.
Education and Experience
No bachelor's degree is required. A certified CAD program or an associate degree is typical, but experience is what counts.
· 5+ years of CAD design experience, ideally in medical devices or orthopedics.
· SolidWorks experience is heavily preferred.
· Training in CSWP-MD and V&V is part of the Staff Designer level on the company's career ladder.
Knowledge and Skills Desired
· Advanced CAD and drafting skills, including GD&T and design for manufacturing.
· Familiarity with design control, DHFs, ISO 13485, and CFR 820.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Teams.
· Clear communication and a practical approach to solving problems.
· Comfort working independently in a remote or hybrid setup.
Compensation and Location
Base salary is up to $100k depending on experience, with a 10% annual bonus eligibility.
· Location: hybrid in the Lehigh Valley, PA, or fully remote.
· Working from one of the company's sites is a plus but not required.
Career Path
Staff Designer is the middle step of a five-level Designer track, with a clear route up to CAD Manager.
