Staff / Senior Software Engineer (AI & Backend)

About This Role

We’re looking for a Staff or Senior Software Engineer who’s passionate about building intelligent backend systems that bring cutting-edge AI capabilities to life. You’ll join a fast-paced, collaborative team working at the intersection of backend engineering and applied AI — building the infrastructure and systems that power real-world AI products.
Bonus points if you’ve worked in healthcare or other regulated domains.

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience: 5+ years of post-college software engineering experience, ideally at a single company.

  • Focus: Strong backend engineering background with hands-on experience applying AI in production environments.

  • Mindset: You thrive in ambiguity, take ownership, and are comfortable iterating quickly to bring new AI-driven products from concept to deployment.

  • Bonus: Experience in healthcare technology or data systems.

  • Commitment: We’re seeking candidates who value long-term growth and contribution — not those chasing the “next hottest thing.”

What You’ll Do

  • Collaborate with Engineering, Product, and Design teams to define and deliver AI-powered product capabilities.

  • Architect, build, and scale AI/LLM agent software systems and backend infrastructure.

  • Contribute to system design, data modeling, and production deployment of AI features.

  • Partner across teams to push the limits of applied AI within a modern cloud environment.

Qualifications

Seniority

  • Minimum 3+ years of post-college backend engineering experience at a company (not including internships).

  • Proven track record as a full-time employee, ideally in roles of increasing responsibility.

  • Advanced degree experience counts toward post-college experience.

Work Experience

  • Professional experience building and maintaining cloud software applications (backend).

  • Demonstrated ability to build or integrate AI/ML features in production — essential for this role.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field from a top university.

Technical Skills

  • Exposure to: Context Engineering, Embedding Systems, Semantic Search, Keyword Search, LLM Agent Design, and statistical/probabilistic software systems.

  • Familiarity with AI/ML and analytics infrastructure, data pipelines, and modern cloud/serverless architectures (GCP preferred).

  • Proficiency in Go, Python, or similar backend languages — or the ability to learn them quickly with strong engineering fundamentals.

Soft Skills

  • Strong sense of ownership and stakeholder value orientation.

  • Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.

  • Passion for building scalable, meaningful technology in high-impact spaces.

Must-Have Traits

  • Average tenure of 4+ years per role, demonstrating long-term commitment.

  • A career mindset — invested in building, scaling, and sustaining impactful systems over time.

  • Alignment with a mission-driven environment in healthcare, not just trend-driven opportunities.

Additional Details

  • Location: Bay Area preferred; remote-first with regular in-person meetups in San Francisco.

  • Industry Interest: A genuine interest in the healthcare space and how AI can drive better outcomes.
