This full-time, permanent Senior Vertical Lathe Machinist – Large Part Machining (1st & 2nd Shift) career opportunity is with a debt-free, family-owned, custom machining powerhouse that has not had a layoff in over 15 years. Unlike high-volume production shops, this is a high-variety environment where you will work directly with the owners on complex, "one-off" large-scale components for the defense, mining, and aerospace industries. The facility is clean, growing, and features a fleet of newer HNK and Toshiba systems. With an average employee tenure of 15 years and several veterans reaching the 30-year mark. This is a stable, professional home for a machinist who takes pride in "heavy-metal" precision and wants to be treated like a person, not a number.
The duties and responsibilities of the successful candidate include the following:
- Perform complete setups and from-scratch programming (G-Code and GibbsCAM) for Vertical Turret Lathes to execute complex boring, drilling, facing, and milling operations
- Manage large-format machining projects, handling components weighing several thousand pounds with 100% accuracy and safety
- Analyze blueprints and technical drawings to determine sequence of operations, tolerances, and optimal tooling for custom, non-repetitive jobs
- Monitor machining processes for peak efficiency, adjusting feeds, speeds, and offsets to ensure first-article quality on every run
- Collaborate directly with ownership and engineering to troubleshoot complex setups and improve processes for critical prototype and R&D projects
The background of the successful candidate must include the following:
- 5+ years of independent setup and machining experience specifically on CNC VTLs or very large CNC Lathes
- Proven track record in a custom job-shop environment (candidates from small-part production backgrounds will not be a fit)
- Proficiency in G-Code programming and the ability to utilize shop trigonometry for layout and verification
- Experience with GibbsCAM and large-scale machinery (HNK, Toshiba, or similar) is highly preferred
- A stable, reliable work history showing a commitment to quality and professional growth
- Being a US citizen or Green Card holder with a residence within a 45-minute commute of the Fox Valley area
