Welding Engineer

Position Summary

Our client is seeking an experienced Welding Engineer to support and continuously improve welding operations within a fast-paced manufacturing environment. This position will be responsible for developing welding processes, troubleshooting weld-related issues, supporting robotic welding systems, improving quality and productivity, and ensuring welding operations meet customer and industry standards.

The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on welding knowledge combined with experience in robotic welding, GMAW, weld process development, weld inspection, and manufacturing process improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, validate, and maintain weld process sheets, welding parameters, procedures, and standards for production welding stations.

  • Develop welding techniques and procedures for manual and robotic welding operations.

  • Troubleshoot weld failures, defects, and process issues and implement corrective actions.

  • Provide technical support for robotic welding programs and automated assembly processes.

  • Assist with robotic weld gun calibration, equipment setup, communication, and performance verification.

  • Analyze weld coupons, cut-and-etch testing, and other weld quality results to ensure compliance with customer specifications.

  • Develop and maintain Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and required documentation.

  • Ensure automated welding programs have all required documentation and approvals before release to production.

  • Monitor welding consumables, shielding gas mixtures, gas consumption, and welding wire usage.

  • Identify and implement cost-saving opportunities related to welding processes and consumables.

  • Conduct welder and technician training on welding processes, equipment, procedures, and quality standards.

  • Perform or support welding qualification and certification testing.

  • Inspect weld joints and ensure compliance with company standards, customer specifications, and applicable industry codes.

  • Maintain accurate documentation of manual and robotic welding parameters, weld audits, procedures, and technical references.

  • Partner with Maintenance to develop and support preventive maintenance programs for welding equipment.

  • Evaluate new welding technologies, equipment, and processes for potential implementation.

  • Support engineering changes, new equipment installations, launches, and continuous improvement projects.

  • Work closely with Production, Quality, Maintenance, and Engineering teams to improve weld quality, productivity, and equipment reliability.

  • Support plant safety, quality, 5S, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering OR approximately 3+ years of equivalent hands-on welding engineering/process experience.

  • Strong understanding of GMAW welding principles and AWS standards.

  • Experience developing welding parameters, process sheets, procedures, and training documentation.

  • Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to identify weld defects and engineer effective solutions.

  • Working knowledge of welding systems, equipment, software, and inverter-based power supplies.

  • Experience working with advanced high-strength steels, aluminum alloys, and/or magnesium alloys.

  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, welding specifications, and technical documentation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Robotic programming experience; FANUC strongly preferred.

  • Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification.

  • American Welding Society (AWS) training or certifications.

  • Experience with automated or robotic welding systems.

  • Experience taking welding or automation projects from concept through installation and production launch.

  • Automotive manufacturing experience.

  • Experience conducting weld inspections, cut-and-etch testing, and weld section analysis.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a hands-on Welding Engineer who is comfortable working directly on the manufacturing floor. This individual should be able to move between troubleshooting robotic weld issues, analyzing weld quality, developing process improvements, and working with production and maintenance teams to keep equipment and processes running effectively.

Strong candidates will bring a combination of welding engineering knowledge, robotic welding experience, problem-solving ability, and practical manufacturing experience.
