We are seeking an experienced Clinical Laboratory Technologist – Level V to join a large academic medical center in New York City. This senior role combines hands-on laboratory testing with supervisory oversight, quality management, and operational leadership. The ideal candidate brings deep technical expertise, a commitment to patient safety, and the ability to lead a high-performing laboratory team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise testing personnel; monitor QC, instrument maintenance, and quality assurance activities to ensure performance specifications are consistently met
- Initiate corrective/preventive actions when test systems deviate from established standards; ensure results are not reported until issues are resolved
- Verify staff training and proficiency prior to independent patient specimen testing; conduct and oversee competency assessments
- Perform preliminary review of proficiency testing, test methodology studies, and monthly QC/calibration/maintenance records
- Follow and enforce pre-analytic and analytic procedures; maintain thorough documentation of all tests, QC activities, and corrective actions
- Oversee full specimen lifecycle (pre-analytical through post-analytical), inventory management, and environmental condition monitoring
- Coordinate department staffing and scheduling; assist with hiring, training, and performance appraisals
- Ensure effective shift-to-shift communication on pending tasks, compliance items, and patient care priorities
- Manage departmental functions including financial oversight, site operations, and institutional PI processes; develop and implement processes to achieve strategic goals
- Maintain compliance with HIPAA, infection control, safety policies, and continuing education requirements
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in chemical, biological, or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology
- Valid NYS Clinical Laboratory Technologist license (NYSED) required
- Minimum 4 years of clinical laboratory technologist experience qualifying as a regulatory/accreditation supervisor
- Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certification from ASCP strongly preferred
- In-depth knowledge of laboratory operations, regulations, biosafety, and LIS/middleware applications
- Strong supervisory, communication, analytical, and organizational skills; ability to perform effectively under pressure
