Civil Superintendent – Structures & Earthwork (Heavy Civil)

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Civil Superintendent to lead field operations for large-scale heavy civil construction projects with a focus on structures, concrete, earthwork, grading, and major infrastructure improvements.

The ideal candidate has extensive experience managing complex heavy civil construction activities, including bridge structures, concrete structures, foundations, excavation, mass grading, embankments, utilities, and site development. This role requires a strong field leader who can manage crews, subcontractors, equipment, and daily operations while ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and according to schedule and contract requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise daily field construction operations for large-scale heavy civil projects.
  • Manage construction activities including structures, concrete placement, earthwork, grading, excavation, and site development.
  • Oversee self-performed work crews, subcontractors, equipment operators, and field personnel.
  • Plan and coordinate daily work activities to meet project milestones, schedules, and production goals.
  • Ensure construction is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with contract documents, drawings, specifications, and quality standards.
  • Provide field leadership for structural concrete operations, including foundations, bridge structures, retaining walls, box structures, and other concrete elements.
  • Coordinate mass grading, excavation, embankment, soil placement, compaction, and site preparation activities.
  • Review project plans, specifications, and drawings to provide technical direction and resolve field issues.
  • Assist project management with schedule development, work planning, site logistics, and construction sequencing.
  • Coordinate subcontractor activities and ensure work is performed according to project requirements.
  • Monitor labor productivity, equipment utilization, material usage, and overall project performance.
  • Provide recommendations regarding construction methods, equipment selection, sequencing, and means and methods.
  • Coordinate inspections, testing requirements, and quality control procedures.
  • Maintain daily reports, production tracking, manpower records, and field documentation.
  • Communicate effectively with Project Managers, owners, engineers, inspectors, and subcontractors.
  • Support and enforce project safety plans and promote a strong safety culture.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by project leadership.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma/GED required; equivalent construction experience accepted.
  • 10+ years of experience as a Superintendent managing heavy civil construction projects.
  • Experience leading projects valued at $200M+ preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of heavy civil construction methods, sequencing, and field operations.
  • Proven experience managing structural concrete and earthwork operations.
  • Strong understanding of grading plans, structural drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Experience coordinating subcontractors, craft labor, and equipment operations.
  • Knowledge of public works, DOT, municipal, and government construction requirements preferred.
  • Experience working with union labor and multiple trades preferred.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Technical Skills

Experience with the following is preferred:

  • Procore or similar construction management software
  • Bluebeam
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • HCSS HeavyBid or similar construction software
  • Project scheduling and production tracking tools

Certifications

Preferred:

  • OSHA Safety Certifications
  • First Aid / CPR Certification
  • Construction safety training certifications

Work Environment

  • Full-time position.
  • Field-based role working on active heavy civil construction sites.
  • Requires daily interaction with crews, subcontractors, and project stakeholders.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Must be able to walk active construction sites and inspect ongoing operations.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required onsite.
  • Travel and extended project assignments may be required.
