Rochester, NY - Relocation assistance available

If you’ve built your career designing and delivering highway projects — and you’re ready to lead a practice, not just manage a workload — this is worth a look.

A well-established Western New York transportation consulting firm is growing its Rochester office and looking for a highway-focused leader to take ownership of the discipline. This role is highways and roads — pavement, reconstruction, complete streets, drainage — not structures or bridges. If that’s your lane and you’re ready to run it, read on.

Why this Highway Practice Lead role stands out:

Lead a focused highway practice with real autonomy — decisions get made here, not three layers up

Stay technical with your own design projects while guiding a team of highway engineers and PMs

Strong, established client base across NYSDOT Regions 4 and 5— county, municipal, and state markets

Direct access to firm leadership — your voice carries weight from day one

What you’ll be doing:

Own scope, schedule, budget, plans production, and resource direction across active highway projects

Lead highway design projects from Preliminary through PS&E: pavement restoration, roadway reconstruction, ADA compliance, signing and pavement markings, multi-use facilities, work zone traffic control, complete streets, and drainage improvements

Guide and mentor junior, mid-level, and senior highway engineers

      Provide QA/QC for highway deliverables

Guide development of contract specifications, cost estimates, and bid documents

Retain and grow relationships with local and regional transportation clients

About You:

NY PE license preferred; candidates licensed in another state with a clear path to NY licensure are welcome to apply

10+ years of transportation design and project management experience with a focus on highway and roadway work

Strong working knowledge of NYSDOT standards, project delivery processes, and Locally Administered Federal Aid requirements

Experience leading teams and developing engineers at multiple levels

Proficiency guiding teams using MicroStation, Open Roads, and/or Civil 3D

Business development instincts — comfortable with client relationships, proposals, and go/no-go strategy

Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) designation is a plus
