Powerhouse & Facilities Engineer

We are seeking an experienced Powerhouse & Facilities Engineer to oversee the operation, maintenance, and reliability of critical plant utility systems supporting a high-volume manufacturing facility. This is a long-term contract to direct opportunity with a new manufacturing facility in the Fort Wayne, IN area. This role is responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable operation of mechanical, electrical, and power generation systems that support manufacturing operations. The engineer will lead efforts related to powerhouse operations, energy management, and infrastructure reliability, ensuring plant utilities meet production, safety, and environmental requirements. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience in manufacturing environments, managing complex utility systems such as high voltage power distribution, boilers, chillers, compressed air systems, and HVAC infrastructure.

 

Key Responsibilities

Powerhouse & Utility Operations

  • Oversee the operation and maintenance of plant powerhouse systems, including boilers, steam generation, compressed air, chilled water, and industrial HVAC systems.

  • Manage high-voltage electrical distribution systems, substations, switchgear, and backup power systems.

  • Ensure reliable delivery of critical utilities including:

    • Electrical power

    • Steam

    • Chilled water

    • Process cooling

    • Compressed air

    • Natural gas

    • Industrial water systems

 

Facilities Engineering

  • Lead preventive and predictive maintenance programs for facility infrastructure and plant utilities.

  • Troubleshoot complex mechanical, electrical, and controls issues impacting plant utilities.

  • Support production teams by ensuring facility reliability and uptime.

 

Capital Projects & System Improvements

  • Lead or support capital improvement projects related to plant infrastructure and utility systems.

  • Manage projects involving:

    • Boiler or chiller replacements

    • Electrical infrastructure upgrades

    • Energy efficiency improvements

    • Utility capacity expansions

  • Coordinate with external contractors, engineers, and utility providers.

 

Energy & Sustainability

  • Monitor plant energy usage and efficiency metrics.

  • Identify opportunities for energy reduction, sustainability initiatives, and utility cost savings.

  • Support compliance with environmental and regulatory requirements related to plant utilities.

 

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure powerhouse and utility systems comply with:

    • OSHA regulations

    • NFPA electrical standards

    • Boiler and pressure vessel regulations

    • Environmental regulations

  • Participate in plant safety programs and risk assessments.

 

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with:

    • Maintenance teams

    • Production engineering

    • Environmental health & safety

    • Plant leadership

  • Provide technical guidance on facility infrastructure and utilities.

 

Qualifications

 

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Facilities Engineering; Equivalent technical experience may be considered

 

Experience

  • 5+ years of experience supporting manufacturing facilities or plant utilities

  • Hands-on experience with industrial powerhouse or central utility systems
