CAD Designer – Contract to Direct

About the Opportunity

We are seeking a CAD Designer to join our client's growing manufacturing team in Romeo, Michigan. This is a hands-on opportunity for a detail-oriented CAD professional who enjoys working with both computers and people and wants to be closely involved with engineering and manufacturing.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable taking technical drawings and translating them into accurate 3D CAD models, manufacturing drawings, sheet-metal flat patterns, and process documentation. You will work directly with engineers, machinists, fabricators, and shop-floor personnel to help identify and resolve manufacturing issues and make sure designs can be produced accurately and efficiently.

This position is being offered on a contract-to-direct basis, providing an opportunity to demonstrate your skills and become a long-term member of the team.

What You'll Do

• Create accurate 3D CAD models from 2D engineering and technical drawings.
• Create check drawings from CAD models to verify dimensional and geometric accuracy.
• Develop flat blanks and flat patterns for sheet-metal components.
• Create process drawings for parts that are formed, machined, welded, or otherwise manufactured.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings, dimensions, notes, specifications, and tolerances.
• Apply Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) principles.
• Work directly with shop-floor personnel to understand manufacturing requirements.
• Communicate with engineers, machinists, fabricators, and other departments to resolve design and manufacturing issues.
• Modify CAD models and drawings based on manufacturing feedback.
• Maintain accurate and organized CAD files and technical documentation.
• Support engineering and manufacturing activities as needed.
• Help bridge the gap between engineering design and actual shop-floor production.

What We're Looking For

• Strong work ethic, reliability, and personal accountability.
• Ability to read and interpret technical and engineering drawings.
• Working knowledge of GD&T.
• Experience with SolidWorks or comparable 3D CAD software.
• Understanding of basic manufacturing processes, including:
• Machining
• Drilling and tapping
• Welding
• Press-brake forming
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively with engineers, machinists, fabricators, and shop-floor personnel.
• Friendly, outgoing, and calm personality.
• Comfortable working in a hands-on manufacturing environment.

Preferred Experience

The following experience is a plus but not required:

• Knowledge of common engineering and manufacturing materials.
• Understanding of fixture design principles.
• Experience with Mastercam.
• Experience creating manufacturing or process documentation.
• Previous experience in a machine shop, fabrication environment, or manufacturing setting.
• Experience supporting defense, aerospace, automotive, or other highly regulated manufacturing environments.
