Automotive Assembly Systems (Overhead, Power & Free, Inverted, Lifts & Carriers, EMS, AGV's)
We are seeking a Manufacturing Engineer with deep experience designing, supporting, and commissioning automotive assembly plant conveyor systems, including overhead, inverted, power & free, EMS, lifts, carriers, skillet systems, and specialty material handling equipment. This role supports vehicle body, paint, general and final assembly operations and works closely with controls, manufacturing, and installation teams to deliver safe, reliable, and production-ready systems.
Conveyor & Mechanical System Design
- Design and engineer overhead and inverted conveyor systems, including:
- Power & Free conveyors
- EMS (Electrified Monorail Systems)
- Skillet and friction-drive conveyors
- Lift tables, transfer units, carriers, and hangers
- Develop mechanical layouts, sections, elevations, and installation drawings
- Size and specify chains, trolleys, drives, motors, gearboxes, and structural supports
- Perform load calculations, cycle time analysis, and throughput studies
- Design conveyor interfaces with:
- Robotics and automation
- Tooling and fixtures
- Ergonomic workstations
Automotive Assembly Support
- Support Body Shop, Paint Shop, and General Assembly conveyor applications
- Collaborate with plant engineering, manufacturing, safety, and maintenance teams
- Participate in DFMEA, PFMEA, and design reviews
- Ensure compliance with OEM standards and safety requirements
Project Execution & Field Support
- Provide engineering support during fabrication, installation, and commissioning
- Assist with field troubleshooting, modifications, and system optimization
- Support launch activities, including run-offs, debug, and production ramp-up
- Coordinate with suppliers, integrators, and contractors
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (or equivalent experience)
- 5+ years of conveyor or material handling experience in automotive assembly
- Hands-on experience with:
- Overhead & inverted conveyor systems
- Power & Free conveyors
- Lifts, carriers, and transfer systems
- Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, tolerances, and manufacturability
- Proficiency with 2D/3D CAD tools (AutoCAD, Inventor, SolidWorks, or similar)
- Ability to read and interpret OEM standards and specifications
- Willingness to support plant floor and field work as required
Preferred Qualifications
- 10+ years automotive conveyor engineering experience (Senior/Lead level)
- Experience supporting OEM assembly plants (body, paint, GA)
- Knowledge of controls integration and conveyor PLC interfaces
- Familiarity with:
- Ergonomic standards
- OSHA and machine safety requirements
- Project schedules and cost tracking
- Previous experience with launches, model changeovers, or plant expansions
