The Quality Control Inspector maintains quality standards by approving incoming materials, in-process production, and finished products; and recording quality results. To do this work, the Inspector reads work orders and blueprints; programs and operates the coordinate measuring machine and other electronic inspection equipment and software; chooses and uses measuring tools (including second checks with additional tools as needed); handles/moves material, tools and equipment; troubleshoots issues;
recommends adjustments to be made; and ensures that materials, in-process work, and vendors meet required specifications. This work requires a high degree of attention to detail and precision coupled with diplomacy, as the Inspector uses informal authority to halt work when necessary so that adjustments can be made.

Responsibilities
  • 1. Approve incoming materials by confirming specifications; conducting visual and measurement tests;
    rejecting and returning unacceptable materials.
    2. Approve in-process production by confirming specifications; programming CMM as needed; conducting
    visual and measurement tests; communicating required adjustments to machinists.
    3. Approve finished products by confirming specifications and conducting visual and measurement tests.
    4. For finished products not conforming to specifications, write up non-conforming tag, follow-through with
    job manager as to next steps: re-work, scrap, or approved deviation from customer.
    5. Document inspection results by completing reports and logs; inputting data into quality database.
    6. Keep measurement equipment operating accurately by following operating instructions and regularly
    testing tools; checking for accuracy and investigating discrepancies.
    7. Maintain work environment by following standards and procedures and performing regular cleaning and
    maintenance of tools.
    8. Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities.
    9. Suggest and implement improvements.
Qualifications

• Blueprint reading, geometric dimension and tolerance system
• Mathematics: adding, subtracting, multiplication, division, geometry, algebra, trigonometry
• Coordinate measuring machine (CMM) and its programming
• Hand inspection tools/measuring devices: micrometers, height scans, vision scopes, comparators, others
• Electronic inspection equipment and software, including modeling software/GDNT (3D modeling)
• Post work processing and finishing, including effects of post-processing and finishing operations
• Shop operations, systems and work flow
• Machining/tools: what they do and can do
• Standard operating procedures; safety protocols and practices

 

Requires a high school diploma and quality, involved job shadowing with an expert and/or previous work
experience with blueprint reading and measurement tool use. Experience with modeling software a plus.
