CNC Set-Up & Programming Technician

Position Overview
A well-established manufacturing company in St. Louis Park is seeking a CNC Set-Up & Programming Technician to join its Tool Room team. This position will focus on setting up, programming, and optimizing CNC equipment used for tooling, prototypes, replacement components, repairs, and production support.
This is a hands-on role that works closely with Engineering, Quality, Production, and other CNC team members. The technician will help develop new machining programs, improve existing processes, troubleshoot equipment and programming issues, and produce precision components that support plant operations.
Candidates with a strong CNC machining background will be considered, although previous CNC programming experience is strongly preferred.
Responsibilities
- Program, modify, and optimize CNC programs using Mastercam and G-code/M-code.
- Set up CNC machines, tooling, fixtures, and workholding based on Tool Room and production priorities.
- Program and machine prototype tooling, production tooling, replacement components, repair parts, and other items needed to support plant operations.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, blueprints, and technical specifications.
- Troubleshoot machining, setup, and programming issues and make real-time adjustments to improve quality and efficiency.
- Perform in-process inspections and verify components meet dimensional and quality requirements.
- Adjust programs, offsets, tooling, and machining parameters as needed.
- Work with Engineering, Tool Design, Quality, Production, and other CNC team members to complete projects.
- Maintain organized documentation for CNC programs, tooling setups, and machining processes.
- Perform routine cleaning, maintenance, and upkeep of CNC machines and Tool Room equipment.
- Support continuous improvement, cost-reduction, quality, and workplace safety initiatives.
- Provide feedback regarding process improvements, tooling needs, and equipment requirements.
- Assist with manual machining and other Tool Room responsibilities when needed.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Technical degree or certification in CNC machining, manufacturing technology, or a related field preferred.
- At least three years of CNC machining experience, preferably within a Tool Room, prototype, tooling, or low-volume manufacturing environment.
- At least two years of CNC programming experience preferred.
- Experience with Mastercam or similar CAM software strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of G-code and M-code programming.
- Experience machining precision components and holding tight tolerances.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, CAD drawings, and technical specifications.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and comfort working with medium to large manufacturing equipment.
- Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- Attention to detail and a commitment to producing quality work.
- Ability to work independently while also collaborating with a team.
- Leadership, training, or mentoring experience is a plus.
- Reliable attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to obtain and maintain forklift certification.
- Willingness to work overtime when needed to meet project or production deadlines.
Compensation and Benefits
The anticipated pay range is $30.00–$36.00 per hour. Final compensation will be based on the candidate’s experience, CNC programming capabilities, technical knowledge, and overall fit for the position.
