POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION: Technology Systems Designer / Engineer
DISCIPLINE: Electrical Engineering
ACCOUNTABLE TO: Department Director
SALARY STATUS: Non-Exempt, starting salary range $85,000 - $110,000
RESPONSIBLE FOR: The design and layout of one or more of the following electrical building systems: sound
systems, fire alarm systems, security systems, programmable clock systems, building paging systems, and
infrastructure for data systems and special sound systems design for projects.
TYPICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Design and layout technology systems to include data systems, clock systems, building paging security
systems, sound systems, fire alarm systems, and associated equipment.
• Input/Draft technology systems information onto drawings.
• Assist in reviewing and editing the master electrical/technology technical specifications to ensure the
explicit requirements of the project are described.
• Assist in incorporating department and industry standards and applicable codes into the design and
layout of electrical systems.
• Participate in in-house project team meetings.
• Work on keeping master specifications up to date with current technology systems and equipment.
• Coordinate electrical designs with other disciplines and consultants to ensure a quality project.
• Performs such other duties that may be assigned from time to time.
• Present technology systems to clients in working to select the proper systems in design of projects.
SCOPE OF AUTHORITY:
The Technology Designer/Engineer has authority to design and incorporate the technical standards and other
requirements into the electrical design for projects.
RELATIONSHIP TO OTHERS:
The Technology Designer/Engineer assists the Registered Project Engineer in incorporating the project goals
and constraints, including client values and objectives, construction and design budget limitations, and
schedule requirements into the electrical design.
KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
• Must have an associate or technical degree in electrical or technology systems design.
• 5+ years of experience in technology design for new buildings, restoration and renovation projects with
emphasis on PK-12 educational facilities with active experience in the technology systems design field to
include experience with materials and equipment, how they work together and how they are installed.
• Experience with communications system cabling for voice, data and video; video distribution systems;
interactive video system; high performance sound reinforcement; audio / video systems; and security
systems
• Experience coordinating technology systems with electrical and architectural design
• Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) certification as administered by BICSI
preferred, or on track to acquiring
• Certified Technology Specialist (CTS) not required, but an advantage
• Experience with Autocad and BIM (Revit) preferred
• Strong communication and organizational skills
• Excellent prioritizing abilities with attention to details
• Strong time management and multi-tasking skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills
PHYSICAL & MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to work in an office-type atmosphere. Must be able to work under pressure in a busy office with
tight deadlines and must be willing and able to work beyond the regular work day which may include evening
and weekend work. Regular attendance is essential. Must be able to provide mathematical reasoning. Must
be able to communicate clearly and concisely to other team members.
