Process Engineer – Intermediate / Senior
Maderra Engineering is currently seeking a qualified individual for the position of Process Engineer – Intermediate / Senior to join our home office Engineering team.
Located in St. John's, NL, Maderra Engineering Inc. provides Engineering, Design, Project Management, and Technical Services, as well as Recruitment and Staffing Services to the Energy, Utility, Mining, and Commercial sectors.
Responsibilities:
Lead the engineering, sizing, and integration of fluid handling systems for major industrial projects. In this role, you will bridge the gap between mechanical design and process fluid dynamics. You will be directly responsible for system modeling, equipment selection (pumps, tanks, valves), and the development of critical process diagrams. This role requires a strong background in hydraulic analysis and mechanical design, with the authority to modify and professionally stamp P&IDs and PFDs.
The primary duties of the Process Engineer – Intermediate / Senior include:
· Hydraulic Modeling & System Analysis
- Build simulation models using AFT Fathom to analyze steady-state fluid distribution systems.
- Perform hydraulic calculations to determine system pressure drops, flow rates, and velocity profiles.
· Equipment Sizing & Specification
- Size and select pumps (centrifugal, positive displacement, submersibles, etc.).
- Determine tank dimensions and storage capacities based on system residence time and operational surge requirements.
· Engineering Documentation & Diagram Control
- Develop and modify Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
- Review and stamp finalized PFDs, P&IDs, and calculations.
· Project Collaboration & Lifecycle Support
- Collaborate with CAD designers to translate P&IDs into accurate 3D piping layouts and structural skid designs.
- Provide technical support during procurement, reviewing vendor quotes and technical data sheets for compliance.
- Assist field teams during construction, commissioning, and system troubleshooting phases.
· Manage assigned projects within budget and time constraints.
· Provide supervision and mentoring to discipline team members where required.
· Ensure all design, analysis and specifications are in accordance with applicable codes, procedures, governing statutory regulations and meet project objectives and industry best practice.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Process Engineering (or a related Industrial discipline).
- Minimum of 6 years of experience engineering industrial fluid systems, piping networks, or chemical processing plants.
- Experience in working with a team of Engineers and Technologists.
- Experience working in a multi-disciplined environment.
- Software Expertise: Advanced proficiency with Applied Flow Technology (AFT) Fathom or similar fluid flow simulation tools.
- Fluid Mechanics: Experience with industrial hydraulics, pipe friction losses, transient behavior assumptions, and pump physics.
- Standard Codes: Working knowledge of ASME codes (e.g., B31.3 for Process Piping, B31.1 for Power Piping) and API standards for tanks and pumps.
- Demonstrated analytical skills, proficiency in report writing, excellent oral communication and presentation skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office suite.
- Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to deal effectively with Clients and the design team in the resolution of project related issues.
- Must be self-motivated, results oriented, and be flexible to work well under tight schedules in a fast-paced multi-disciplinary team environment.
- Eligible for registration as a Member in the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador.
