Lead Automation Specialist
Maderra Personnel is seeking an experienced Lead Automation Specialist with extensive hands-on experience in Emerson DeltaV Distributed Control Systems (DCS). This position will provide technical leadership and automation support across a variety of projects and may be performed in both remote and site-based environments depending on project requirements. Position would be located in Western & Eastern Canada.
The successful candidate will be responsible for leading automation activities, providing technical direction to project teams, supporting clients, and ensuring automation deliverables are completed safely, efficiently, and to a high standard. Regular site travel will be required to support ongoing projects, including commissioning, troubleshooting, testing, and other field activities.

Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership and direction for automation and control system activities across multiple projects.
- Design, develop, configure, and implement automation solutions using Emerson DeltaV DCS platforms.
- Develop and modify control modules, batch strategies, graphics, alarms, historian configurations, and operator interfaces within DeltaV systems.
- Lead troubleshooting and resolve issues related to DCS hardware, software, controllers, networks, and field communications.
- Support DeltaV system upgrades, migrations, expansions, and lifecycle management activities.
- Conduct system testing, validation, loop checks, and commissioning activities for automation systems.
- Participate in and/or facilitate HAT, FAT, SAT, and commissioning activities.
- Review and interpret engineering documentation including control narratives, shutdown keys, cause & effect matrices, P&IDs, alarm lists, and wiring drawings.
- Configure and maintain DeltaV Continuous Historian, Batch Executive, and system security functions as required.
- Provide technical support and guidance to junior automation personnel and project team members.
- Coordinate automation activities with engineering, construction, commissioning, operations, maintenance, and client teams.
- Support project planning, execution, scheduling, and identification of automation-related risks and deliverables.
- Participate in client meetings and provide technical input on automation and control system decisions.
- Maintain accurate documentation related to system configurations, backups, modifications, and operational procedures.
- Ensure compliance with company standards, cybersecurity requirements, and industry safety regulations.
- Travel to client sites as required to support ongoing projects, commissioning, troubleshooting, testing, and field activities.
Requirements
- Minimum of 7 years of experience working with Emerson DeltaV DCS systems in industrial or process control environments.
- Strong hands-on experience with Emerson DeltaV configuration, troubleshooting, and commissioning.
- Demonstrated experience taking a lead role on automation projects and providing technical direction to others.
- Experience with DeltaV controllers, workstations, virtual environments, and system architecture.
- Experience with DeltaV Live, Batch, SIS, or AMS Device Manager is considered an asset.
- Strong drawing review experience including Control Narratives, Shutdown Keys, Alarm Lists, Cause & Effect Diagrams, and P&IDs.
- Experience participating in and/or facilitating HAT, FAT, and SAT activities.
- Knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, OPC, Ethernet/IP, Profibus, and Foundation Fieldbus.
- Experience with control system networking, virtualization, and cybersecurity best practices.
- Strong understanding of process control principles, instrumentation, and alarm management.
- Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to lead and coordinate automation activities while working independently.
- Ability to manage competing priorities across multiple projects and meet project deadlines.
- Ability to work independently in both remote and site-based project environments.
- Willingness and ability to travel to client sites and work rotational site schedules as required by project demands.
