Job Title: Corporate Controller
Location: Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Reports To: Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
Position Summary
The Corporate Controller is responsible for overseeing all accounting and financial reporting functions for a 70-store grocery chain. This role ensures accurate, timely, and compliant financial statements while providing leadership over accounting operations across multiple locations. The Controller will partner closely with the CFO and executive leadership to support strategic decisions, improve financial controls, and scale systems and processes to support growth.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Compliance
- Oversee the preparation and consolidation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for all store locations and corporate entities
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal accounting policies, and applicable regulatory requirements
- Manage the annual audit process and serve as the primary liaison with external auditors
- Oversee tax compliance in coordination with external tax advisors (income, sales/use, payroll, and property taxes)
Accounting Operations
- Lead day-to-day accounting functions including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, and inventory accounting
- Ensure accurate store-level reporting, including sales, margin, shrink, labor, and operating expenses
- Oversee inventory valuation, retail accounting method, and shrink analysis specific to grocery operations
- Maintain and improve internal controls to safeguard company assets and reduce risk
Systems, Processes & Controls
- Own the accounting systems and chart of accounts, driving system enhancements and automation where appropriate
- Develop, document, and enforce accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls across all locations
- Partner with IT and operations to ensure POS, inventory, and financial systems are properly integrated
Leadership & Team Development
- Manage and develop the corporate accounting team, including hiring, training, and performance management
- Provide guidance and support to store-level personnel on accounting and financial procedures
- Foster a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement
Business Partnership & Analysis
- Partner with the CFO and operations leadership to analyze financial results and identify trends, risks, and opportunities
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis processes
- Provide financial insights related to new store openings, remodels, pricing strategies, and cost management initiatives
- Assist with special projects, acquisitions, or strategic initiatives as needed
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
- CPA designation strongly preferred
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership responsibility
- Multi-unit retail experience required; grocery, food, or high-volume retail strongly preferred
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and internal control best practices
- Experience with inventory accounting and cost of goods sold in a retail environment
Preferred
- Experience supporting 50+ locations or complex multi-entity structures
- ERP and POS system experience (e.g., NetSuite, Oracle, SAP, or similar retail-focused systems)
- Prior experience with Retail Inventory Method of accounting
