Role Overview:

Our client is seeking a highly skilled Senior Engineer to play a pivotal role in the planning, design, and execution of infrastructure and capital improvement projects for a local community. This position primarily focuses on the water and wastewater portfolio and operates under the general supervision of the Director of Engineering Services. The ideal candidate will manage complex engineering tasks related to water, stormwater, wastewater infrastructure, and associated public improvements.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead as project manager for designated capital projects and programs, ensuring alignment with project goals.
  • Select and collaborate with qualified consultants, prepare RFPs, and oversee consultant contracts.
  • Evaluate consultant work for the planning, design, and construction of city utilities, including water, wastewater, and stormwater projects.
  • Review plans and specifications for private development projects to ensure compliance with municipal standards.
  • Design and oversee staff or consultants in the development of water treatment and distribution, wastewater collection, and stormwater facilities.
  • Engage in utility master planning and infrastructure design reviews for subdivisions and municipal system improvements.
  • Coordinate efforts with other City departments and external agencies to streamline municipal engineering projects.
  • Support evaluations, investigations, and technical studies related to infrastructure needs and future enhancements.
  • Contribute to the preparation of operating and capital budgets, ensuring that projects adhere to scope, schedule, and budget requirements.
  • Provide information to the public, addressing and resolving inquiries and complaints effectively.

 

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • In-depth understanding of civil, environmental, and municipal utility engineering principles.
  • Proficiency in water treatment and distribution, wastewater collection, sewer system design, and infrastructure project management.
  • Capability to develop, review, and amend civil engineering plans and specifications.
  • Familiarity with Federal, State, and local engineering laws and regulations, ensuring strict compliance.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to convey complex engineering concepts clearly.
  • Proficiency in conducting engineering surveys and utilizing computer-aided drafting software.
  • Excellent judgment and decision-making abilities.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an ABET-accredited institution in civil or environmental engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • At least four years of experience in municipal utility infrastructure design or construction, with a focus on water and wastewater projects preferred.
  • Comprehensive understanding of public works and municipal construction standards and practices.
  • Experience in inspecting construction work for compliance with codes and specifications.

 

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Professional Engineer registration in Indiana, or eligibility to obtain registration within six months of employment.

 

Location:  South Bend, IN

Compensation:  $83,000-88,500
