π Role Overview
The Chief Underwriting Officer (CUO) β Property is a senior executive leader responsible for directing property underwriting strategy across commercial and/or personal lines within a P&C carrier, reinsurer, or MGA. This role holds enterprise-level accountability for underwriting appetite, pricing discipline, portfolio performance, and risk governance, with direct ownership of profitability and exposure management. Reporting to executive leadership, the CUO serves as the final authority on property risk selection and portfolio direction, navigating evolving market conditions, catastrophe exposure, and regulatory requirements.
π§ Key Responsibilities
π Define and execute property underwriting strategy, guidelines, and risk appetite
π₯ Build, lead, and develop property underwriting teams with clear authority structures
π Manage portfolio performance, including loss ratios, combined ratio, and disciplined growth
π° Oversee pricing adequacy, risk selection, catastrophe modeling, and reinsurance alignment
π€ Partner with actuarial, claims, risk engineering, and product leadership
π Ensure regulatory compliance, governance standards, audits, and internal controls
π Monitor market trends, emerging risks, and conduct portfolio stress testing
π Champion the use of data, analytics, modeling, and underwriting technology
π Qualifications
π Bachelorβs degree required; MBA preferred
β³ 15+ years of property underwriting experience, including 5β10 years in senior leadership
π Proven track record managing profitable property portfolios
πͺοΈ Deep expertise in property coverage, catastrophe risk, and reinsurance structures
π CPCU, ARM, or equivalent professional designation preferred
π£οΈ Exceptional executive leadership, judgment, and communication skills
