Tax Supervisor
Job Summary
The Tax Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the tax compliance and planning process for a diverse portfolio of clients. This includes reviewing complex federal and state tax returns, conducting technical tax research, and supervising the day-to-day activities of Staff and Senior Accountants. The goal of this position is to ensure high-quality client service while maintaining firm profitability and developing the next generation of tax professionals.
Core Responsibilities
1. Technical Review & Compliance

Detailed Review: Perform high-level reviews of individual (1040), corporate (1120/1120-S), partnership (1065), and trust (1041) tax returns for accuracy and tax-saving opportunities.

Technical Research: Conduct complex tax research and draft technical memos to support tax positions and planning strategies.

Agency Interaction: Represent clients during IRS or state audits and draft responses to government notices.

Planning: Assist Partners/Managers in identifying and implementing tax planning and consulting strategies (e.g., R&D credits, cost segregation, international tax).
2. Team Leadership & Supervision

Workflow Management: Manage the tax engagement lifecycle, including scheduling, delegating tasks, and ensuring all deadlines (especially during "busy season") are met.

Mentorship: Provide real-time feedback and formal performance evaluations for Staff and Senior Accountants.

Training: Lead internal training sessions on new tax laws (e.g., changes from the TCJA) and firm software protocols.
3. Client Relationship Management

Primary Contact: Serve as a day-to-day contact for clients, answering technical questions and gathering necessary financial data.

Business Development: Identify opportunities to offer additional services to existing clients and assist in preparing fee quotes or proposals for prospective clients.
Requirements & Qualifications
Education & Certification

Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting (Master’s in Taxation or Accounting highly preferred).

Active CPA License.
Experience

4–7 years of progressive tax experience in a public accounting firm.

Proven track record of supervising at least 1–2 junior staff members.
Technical Skills

Proficiency in professional tax software (e.g., CCH Axcess/ProSystem fx, Thomson Reuters UltraTax, or GoSystem RS).

Strong command of tax research tools (e.g., RIA Checkpoint, CCH AnswerConnect, or Bloomberg Tax).

Advanced Excel skills for complex data analysis and tax modeling.
