Job Summary:

The VP, Accounting is responsible for the management and internal operations of the accounting functions of the organization. This position reports directly to the CFO and directs the recording and reporting of financial transactions, the annual audit and tax reporting process, cash management, manages internal financial controls, and ensures the integrity of the financials for the organization. This position will serve as a strategic business partner to the CFO, providing critical financial information to make actionable recommendations on both strategy and operations.

Essential Functions:

Accounting

  • Maintain all financial records for the organization, including administrative oversight of system needs (controls, access, etc,)
  • Achieve accounting operational objectives by contributing accounting information and recommendations to strategic plans and objectives; implementing efficiency, accuracy, and service standards; resolving problems; determining system improvements; implementing change
  • Responsible for full cycle accounting function. Includes, but not limited to general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, cash receipts, fixed assets, banking, bank reconciliations, G/L account reconciliations, journal entries, financial review, close schedule, and financial reporting
  • Responsible for all schedules, timelines, and deadlines as it relates to the accounting function
  • Provide oversight for both system and people to verify expenditures fit within the available/approved budget in accordance with the ministries’ approval policy
  • Oversee weekly payments
  • Responsible for accuracy of event settlement forms, reconciliations, and reporting
  • Manage the organization’s chart of counts to best support the organization’s reporting needs
  • Maintain financial security by establishing internal controls and ensuring internal controls are followed
  • Guides other departments by researching and interpreting accounting policy; applying observations and recommendations to operational issues
  • Coordinate Accounting Team functions during annual fundraising event(s)
  • Leverage technology to ensure processes are efficient
  • Manage book valuations (including Impairment Testing, etc.)

Compliance & Reporting

  • Assist Finance with financial variance analysis
  • Review financial reports at all levels of the organization to ensure financials conform to GAAP and other applicable accounting/auditing standards
  • Stay abreast latest accounting standards to ensure the organization follows GAAP. Lead team and organization-wide training on latest developments, changes in policies and procedures.
  • Oversee annual independent audits and serve as primary liaison with audit firm and tax professionals.
  • Responsible for tax reporting including Form 990 tax returns, state returns, review of quarterly payroll tax reconciliations, annual property tax renditions, W-2’s, 1099’s and sales tax returns
  • Ensure preparation of the annual membership renewal for (ECFA)
  • Assist Legal with commercial insurance claims

Leadership

  • Partner with all ministry areas to help them accomplish their tasks while exercising sound financial judgement
  • Prepare and manage budget for Accounting and Finance Departments
  • Hire, manage, evaluate, motivate and develop accounting staff
  • Provide coaching, training and tools for successful accomplishment of team and ministry objectives
  • Responsible for activities of the accounting staff
  • Plans and coordinates projects, processes, and deadlines
  • Actively participate in projects that are aligned with ministry objectives
  • Onboarding new employees on the accounting system, function and services

Non-Essential Functions

Requirements:

  • CPA required

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years accounting experience
  • 3-5 years leading a team

  • Knowledge of regulations for nonprofit 501©3 organizations
