Position Overview
A growing diagnostics laboratory is seeking a Cytogenetics Laboratory Assistant to support daily laboratory operations within its cytogenetics department. This individual will play a key role in specimen processing, tissue culture, quality control activities, and general laboratory support to ensure accurate and timely test results.
This is a hands-on position ideal for individuals looking to build experience in a clinical or molecular laboratory setting.
Key Responsibilities
Specimen Processing & Laboratory Support
- Receive, accession, and process patient specimens in accordance with established laboratory procedures
- Perform tissue culture and assist with cytogenetic testing workflows
- Prepare reagents, solutions, and laboratory materials as needed
- Coordinate and process specimens for send-out testing
Quality Control & Compliance
- Follow established quality control procedures and document all QC activities
- Assist with instrument calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting
- Ensure adherence to CLIA, CAP, and internal laboratory standards
Data Entry & Documentation
- Accurately enter and manage laboratory orders and patient data
- Maintain organized and compliant records of laboratory activities and results
- Investigate and resolve discrepancies or questionable orders
Equipment & Laboratory Maintenance
- Perform routine instrument maintenance and monitor equipment performance
- Stock supplies and maintain appropriate inventory levels
- Ensure a clean, organized, and compliant laboratory environment
Team Support & Operations
- Provide support to laboratory staff to maintain workflow and turnaround times
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and ongoing training
- Follow all safety protocols and properly utilize personal protective equipment (PPE)
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Genetics, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related field
- Prior laboratory experience preferred (clinical or research setting)
- Basic understanding of laboratory procedures and quality standards
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Good pipetting technique and general laboratory skills preferred
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment
Work Environment
- Laboratory setting with exposure to biological materials and chemicals
- Fast-paced, team-oriented environment
- Requires standing, walking, and occasional lifting (up to ~50 lbs)
- Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required
