THE OPPORTUNITY
Pro Services Workforce Solutions has partnered with a cellulose insulation manufacturer in Jenison, MI to fill a direct hire opportunity for an Industrial Maintenance Technician on 3rd shift.
This role is for a mechanically strong tech who can own the overnight shift. You'll keep conveyors, shredders, and packaging lines running, handle the everyday mechanical fixes, and know when to call in help on the bigger jobs. You don't need to be an expert in everything. You need a solid mechanical foundation, a willingness to do the small jobs as well as the big ones, and the commitment to stick with a team that wants you there.
ABOUT THE COMPANY
Our customer manufactures cellulose insulation. They buy paper, grind it, mix it with granular additives, and package the finished product, which contractors use for blown-in insulation. The plant runs several lines with minor variations between them, all on one flow line, so when something goes down, everything stops. That's why maintenance matters so much here.
The maintenance team has a great culture. They get along, they're respectful, they want to help each other, and many of them have been there a long time. A lot of them are family guys who are working for a reason, not just showing up to a job. Tools are provided, and the shop has room to work on projects and fabricate.
Pro Services is working to fill this role for the customer, and we stand behind this team and this opportunity.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
You're thorough and self-directed. If there's a list waiting for you at the start of the shift, you finish it. When you hit a problem, you use the tools and resources around you to work it out instead of needing a lot of back-and-forth. You'll jump on a breakdown, but you'll also grease, walk the lines, and handle the small stuff without being asked. Nobody here is above getting dirty.
On an off shift, you and the foreman are the leaders on the floor. You communicate quickly and clearly, so production knows when a job is done and nobody is left waiting. You can move from one call to the next without losing track, and you know there are usually several ways to fix a problem. You also know when to bring someone else in and when to take a few minutes to help an operator understand the equipment. You're a team player who takes ownership, and you live our core values of Safety, Integrity, Pride, and Teamwork.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
■ Serve as the maintenance tech on 3rd shift in a mostly reactive environment, keeping the line running for a newer production crew.
■ Handle the everyday mechanical work, such as rollers, chains, bearings, shafts and seals, and gearboxes.
■ Maintain and repair conveyors, shredders, packaging lines, and robot cells.
■ Use MIG welding to make plant improvements and repairs, such as guarding, doors, bracing, and brackets. This is not structural welding.
■ Work on hydraulics on the packaging units, including hose failures, O-rings, and leaks. You'll make hoses, follow the valve lights to find problems, pull cylinders, and bleed the system during shutdowns. Systems run up to 1,300 PSI. When a hydraulic problem is bigger than one person, you'll reach out for help.
■ Troubleshoot basic electrical issues. Figure out whether a motor problem is mechanical or electrical, check that contacts are working and power is flowing, and follow tracking lights. Use LOTO to replace contactors, relays, and motor starters.
■ Use the HMI as a troubleshooting tool, for example to clear and monitor an over-amp alert.
■ Stay proactive between calls by walking and listening to the lines, greasing, working through CMMS work orders and to-do lists, and keeping in touch with production.
WHAT YOU BRING
■ 3+ years of industrial maintenance experience, with the ability to work with limited oversight.
■ Strong basic mechanical skills with conveyor systems, bearings, shafts and seals, and gearboxes.
■ MIG welding experience.
■ Basic electrical troubleshooting skills, including how power flows, contacts, relays, and motors, plus safe LOTO practices.
■ Basic hydraulic and pneumatic experience.
■ Clear, quick communication with production and supervisors.
■ Ability to work 3rd shift Sunday through Thursday, plus 5–10 hours of overtime a week and occasional weekends.
■ Ability to train on 1st shift for 2–8 weeks before moving to 3rd shift.
NICE TO HAVE
■ Intermediate or advanced mechanical experience, including rebuilding mechanical devices and reading diagrams and schematics.
■ Stick or Arc welding, or intermediate welding experience.
■ Electrical experience with control voltage, single phase, and 480V three phase, along with meter use, cabinet troubleshooting, wiring, and sensors.
■ HMI and robot experience.
■ Experience with positive displacement, air diaphragm, or centrifugal pumps.
■ Experience in packaging or pulp and paper.
TRAINING AND ONBOARDING
■ You'll train on 1st shift for 2–8 weeks, depending on how quickly you pick things up, before moving to 3rd shift. The most senior tech on days leads the training.
■ Your first week covers safety, aerial lift, forklift, and LOTO.
■ You'll spend full days with operators learning the equipment, with a lot of shadowing, and you'll start picking up PM work.
■ Your first couple of weeks are laid out on a schedule and a progression sheet that supervisors sign off on, so you always know what's expected.
PAY AND SCHEDULE
■ $34 – $36/hr, based on experience, plus a $2/hr 3rd shift premium.
■ 3rd shift, Sunday through Thursday, typically 10:00 PM – 6:00 AM.
■ Expect 5–10 hours of overtime a week and occasional weekends.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
■ The plant is dusty, not greasy. Most of the time you can brush it off and go straight home.
■ PPE is provided. Respirators aren't required, but N95 masks are available for dustier jobs.
■ Tools are provided, so you don't need to bring your own.
■ Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling in the 21–50 lb range for less than a third of the shift.
■ About 80% of the shift is spent standing and 40% walking, with kneeling plus some squatting, crouching, bending, crawling, and ladder or scaffold work.
■ Normal vision is required, including visual acuity, depth perception, and field of vision.
■ Non-union facility.
