Project Engineer - Gas Appliances
Role Purpose
As a Project Engineer, you will protect and advance our core legacy gas-heating product line, including patio infrared heaters, high-intensity heaters, tube heaters, brooders, and commercial/industrial air heaters. You will lead new product designs, modify existing product lines in response to market or component changes, and own the critical CSA and BSI certification processes for North American and European market launches.
This is an end-to-end ownership role ideal for an engineer who thrives in an environment where they can manage a product from initial concept through compliance testing and onto the manufacturing floor.
Core Responsibilities
-
Product Design & Iteration: Design new gas-fired heating products in alignment with Product Planning Committee proposals. Redesign and modify existing products to address component obsolescence, cost pressures, regulatory updates, and customer feedback.
-
Compliance & Certification: Own the submission packages, manage test schedules, and resolve laboratory findings for CSA and BSI certification processes for both new and revised gas appliances.
-
CAD Modeling: Create and edit detailed product drawings using SolidWorks.
-
Prototyping & Lab Testing: Facilitate the construction and testing of prototypes within GFP’s certified testing laboratory, documenting all engineering tests in accordance with lab manuals.
-
Standards Compliance: Ensure all designs comply with relevant construction, design, and safety standards (including CSA/ANSI Z83 series, BS EN 416-1 and 416-2, and applicable NFPA codes).
-
Supply Chain Support: Specify components and provide technical insights to the Engineering Services Coordinator regarding Bill of Materials (BOMs), part numbers, and supplier selection.
-
Technical Documentation: Provide core technical content for installation manuals, product labels, and service documentation.
-
Value Engineering: Identify cost-reduction opportunities through smart design modifications and partner with supply chain teams to evaluate alternate suppliers.
-
Manufacturing Support: Assist plant personnel during the first-run assembly of new products and provide ongoing engineering support to the manufacturing floor.
Position Requirements
Must-Have Qualifications (Firm Filters)
-
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
-
Experience: 3+ years of product engineering experience at a gas-fired appliance, commercial heating, or HVAC equipment manufacturer.
-
Software: Proficiency in SolidWorks (or equivalent 3D modeling software).
-
Career Track: Total work experience exceeds 4 years (this should not be your first job post-graduation).
Nice-to-Have Qualifications (Strong Assets)
-
Certification Expertise: Direct experience navigating the CSA, UL, ETL, BSI, or equivalent gas appliance certification process, including European market certifications (BSI, BS EN standards, UKCA, CE).
-
Combustion Knowledge: Hands-on lab testing experience (combustion, performance, safety) and direct engineering experience with burners, gas valves, flame management, and ignition systems.
-
Electrical Integration: Proficient understanding of low-voltage controls (up to 600V) for gas appliance integration.
-
Product Specifics: Specific experience with tube heaters, infrared heaters, unit heaters, high-intensity applications, or agricultural heating equipment (brooders).
-
Company Fit: Past experience working at a mid-sized manufacturer (under 1,000 employees) where engineers own end-to-end product responsibility.
-
Methodologies: Exposure to Lean Manufacturing, Design for Manufacturing (DFM), or Design for Assembly (DFA).
