HVAC Controls Systems Team Leader

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced HVAC Controls Systems Team Leader to oversee the day-to-day activities of a field service and controls technician team. This position combines technical HVAC/building controls knowledge with team leadership, operational management, customer satisfaction, and financial responsibility.

The Team Leader will manage technician deployment and routing, monitor team performance, support service and installation operations, and ensure projects and service agreements are executed safely, efficiently, and profitably.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise an assigned team of HVAC/controls field technicians, providing coaching, direction, and ongoing professional development.
  • Plan technician workloads, monthly routes, and field resource deployment to effectively support customer and business requirements.
  • Monitor operational performance, profitability, safety, quality, and customer satisfaction.
  • Develop and maintain individual development plans for team members and ensure appropriate training and skill development.
  • Conduct regular one-on-one meetings, performance reviews, operational reviews, and financial reviews with direct reports.
  • Recruit, hire, develop, and retain qualified operational personnel.
  • Establish clear performance expectations and provide consistent coaching and feedback.
  • Ensure service and installation work is completed in accordance with contractual requirements and customer expectations.
  • Work closely with sales teams to support service opportunities and identify potential installation, retrofit, and account-growth opportunities.
  • Identify additional opportunities within existing customer accounts and communicate them to appropriate sales and branch resources.
  • Manage assigned service account portfolios with a focus on customer retention, revenue growth, and appropriate profitability.
  • Support staffing plans and workforce requirements based on current and anticipated business needs.
  • Implement and monitor HVAC/BAS operational standards, procedures, and best practices.
  • Evaluate operational effectiveness and recommend process improvements where appropriate.
  • Lead or participate in service and installation operational review meetings.
  • Review bids, estimates, and project information for accuracy and operational feasibility.
  • Coordinate workforce utilization and deployment of field resources.
  • Work with other team leaders and managers to ensure appropriate staffing and technical skill levels are available for successful and profitable project execution.
  • Maintain strong communication between field operations, sales, management, and customers.
  • Promote and enforce company safety standards and ensure field activities are performed in accordance with established safety requirements.
  • Support strategic initiatives, business planning, account management, and continuous improvement efforts.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive operational experience within HVAC services, building automation, or a closely related environment.
  • At least 3 years of management or supervisory experience with direct responsibility for employee productivity, performance, coaching, and development.
  • Strong understanding of HVAC service operations and field technician management.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance customer satisfaction, operational execution, safety, and financial performance.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business, or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant professional experience.
  • Experience working with Metasys building automation/control systems.
  • 8+ years of HVAC operational experience, including leadership responsibilities.
  • Experience managing BAS/HVAC controls service technicians and related field operations.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt certification or similar process-improvement experience.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary Range: $89,000 – $134,000, depending on experience, education, technical knowledge, skills, internal equity, and market considerations.

The position also includes a competitive performance-based bonus plan tied to individual, team, and company performance.
