Job Title: Medical Records Technician

Job Code: GST050/Admin. Assistant 1

Shift: Full-Time (40 hours per week on average)

Job Hours: Day: Times May Vary

Base Location: Lawrenceville, GA.

Division/Department/Program: Business Services

 

Under the direction of the Corporate Compliance and Privacy Officer Department, the Medical Records Technician is responsible for compiling, processing, and maintaining the security, confidentiality, completeness, and accuracy of the medical records of the agency in accordance with medical, administrative, ethical, legal, and regulatory requirements of the health care system, policies, and procedures. Maintains and disposes of medical records in compliance with all state and federal HIPPA guidelines. May conduct utilization reviews.

Get client information by observing, receiving, ad otherwise obtaining information from all relevant sources; Evaluate information to determine compliance with standards by using relevant information and individual judgment to determine whether events or processes comply with laws, regulations, or standards; Accurately invoices reproduction costs for medical records and follows up to be sure invoice amount paid and appropriately logged in accounts receivable; Train new staff and update staff on changes in regulations or policies or prepare and conduct training sessions on medical records maintenance, processing, retention, and release for department clinicians and support staff, managed care network providers;

Assist with destruction of client records and maintaining destruction log according to View Point Health policies and procedures; Attend training to maintain updated knowledge about state and federal HIPPA guidelines; Attends staff meetings as required;

This position performs a wide range of office administration duties for assigned functions or program areas, duties may be complex in nature and may involve

access to confidential information. May research, investigate, and/or resolve program data or issues. Drafts documentation, reports, or presentations. Represents program or unit, provides information and assistance to internal and external customers.

Duties & Responsibilities:

·         Performs job responsibilities with minimal supervision.

·         Serves as job expert or organization resource in assigned areas.

·         Compiles and maintains clients' medical records to document condition and treatment and to provide data for research or cost control and care improvement efforts.

·         Identifies, compiles, abstracts, and codes client data, using standard classification systems.

·         Plans, develops, maintains, and operates a variety of health record indexes and storage and retrieval systems to collect, classify, store, and analyze information.

·         Processes client admission and discharge documents

·         Protects the security of medical records to ensure that confidentiality is maintained.

·         Releases information to persons and agencies according to regulations

·         Reviews records for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with regulations

·         Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate's degree from an accredited college or university OR HSD/GED AND Two (2) years of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

·         Certification as a medical records technician by the American Health

Information Management Association OR associate or bachelor’s Degree in related field.

·         Two (2) years’ experience as Medical Records Technician/Processor in a medical record unit.

·         Experience processing records requests in fast-paced environment

·         Knowledgeable in HIPAA and/or state and federal confidentiality guidelines

·         Experience in culturally diverse or mental health setting

Requirements/Competencies:

·         Must be able to lift 20 pounds.

·         Requires long periods of sitting/standing.

·         Must have valid Georgia driver’s license and Motor Vehicle Record in accordance with company policy.

·         Candidates for selection must pass a criminal background check (including fingerprinting)

·         Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and subject to random drug screens.

·         Any combination of training and experience, which would have enabled the applicant to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities Note: Some positions may require a valid driver's license.
