We are seeking an experienced senior laboratory leader to serve as Deputy Administrator of Technical Operations within the Pathology department of a large academic medical center in New York City. This role is a key member of the laboratory leadership team — alongside the Technical Director, Medical Director, and Administrative Director — and is accountable for the overall operational performance, quality management, and continuous improvement of laboratory services across multiple areas.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide operational and technical leadership across laboratory service areas in accordance with NYS CLEP, CAP, and TJC standards
- Supervise area supervisors, technologists, technicians, aides, and support staff; conduct performance evaluations and take corrective action as needed
- Develop and maintain staffing schedules to ensure adequate coverage; implement cross-training across laboratory areas to manage shortages effectively
- Ensure staff training, competency assessments, and annual education requirements are completed for all personnel
- Implement and maintain the QC program for all laboratory testing; monitor QC results, turnaround times, preventive maintenance schedules, and inventory of critical supplies
- Ensure laboratory enrollment and compliance with NYS CLEP and CAP proficiency testing programs; oversee timely handling and reporting of all proficiency surveys
- Write, update, and review technical procedures, QC protocols, and instrument maintenance procedures; ensure an approved, current procedure manual is accessible to all staff
- Evaluate, validate, and implement new instruments and methodologies; prepare and execute validation plans in consultation with laboratory leadership
- Lead LIS and EHR implementation efforts (including system validation, security, and staff training); provide ongoing technical troubleshooting support
- Oversee financial management functions including purchasing requests, requisitions, and vendor contract management
- Represent the laboratory at institutional meetings and committees; report quality improvement indicators at departmental QI committee meetings
- Perform patient specimen processing and clinical testing at workstations during heavy workload, instrument downtime, or staffing shortages
- Maintain strict HIPAA compliance and uphold National Patient Safety Goals
Qualifications:
- Valid NYS Clinical Laboratory Technologist license (NYSED) required
- Must meet laboratory supervisor qualifications per NYS Public Health Law, Title 10, Section 58-1.4
- Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Technology, biology, chemistry, medical technology, or physical sciences; or minimum 5 years of laboratory experience including supervisory responsibility
- Minimum 5 years of clinical laboratory experience; 3 years of supervisory/management experience preferred
- Minimum 2 years of experience overseeing laboratory operations, establishing laboratory programs, and reviewing safety data in a hospital or healthcare setting
- Working knowledge of ISO standards, GLP, and laboratory information systems (LIS/EHR)
- Strong leadership, communication, analytical, and conflict resolution skills
