The CNC Lathe Machinist is responsible for programming, setting up, and operating CNC lathe machines to produce high-precision parts that meet required tolerances and deadlines.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

1. CNC Programming, Setup, and Operation (80%)

  • Write and edit complex CNC programs both on-machine and offline using CAD/CAM software.
  • Design and build complex fixtures for various machining operations.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, job travelers, work instructions, program sheets, tooling sheets, quality documents, and GD&T standards.
  • Set up production machines according to specifications, ensuring proper selection and secure attachment of fixtures, jaws, cutting tools, and accessories.
  • Apply mathematical skills to calculate dimensions, tolerances, and machining parameters.
  • Identify and correct machining errors, adjusting machine controls as necessary.
  • Inspect and measure completed parts to ensure quality and compliance with specifications.

2. Workplace Safety & Maintenance (10%)

  • Perform routine maintenance on machines and keep the work area organized and clean.
  • Safely operate material handling equipment such as cranes and carts.
  • Follow all company safety protocols, including machine guarding and proper operation procedures.

3. Reporting & Documentation (5%)

  • Maintain accurate records of work orders, quantities produced, and quality reports.
  • Follow work order instructions, interpret blueprints, and understand geometric tolerances.
  • Participate in training and perform miscellaneous duties as assigned.

4. Other Duties (5%)

  • Perform additional tasks as requested by the supervisor.

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required).
  • Associate degree in Manufacturing/Technical Programming, completion of a full apprenticeship program, or successful completion of relevant company training (preferred).
  • 5+ years of experience as a fully qualified machinist (required).

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, job travelers, work instructions, program sheets, tooling sheets, and GD&T standards.
  • Experience with Mastercam, SolidWorks, or similar CAD/CAM software.
  • Strong ability to use precision inspection tools (calipers, micrometers, gauges).
  • Solid mathematical skills, including algebra, geometry, and basic trigonometry (preferred).
  • Deep knowledge of work holding, cutting tools, grinding wheels, and shop supplies.
  • Ability to plan, program, set up, and run production based on engineering drawings.
  • Strong understanding of quality control plans, calibration, and proper use of inspection equipment.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Strong time management and ability to work independently or collaboratively.
