Job Summary: 

We are seeking a temporary Cultural Resources Data & Digitization Technician to support the digitization of physical records within a federal agency’s cultural resources office. This short-term assignment (~60 days) focuses on scanning, organizing, and digitally archiving cultural resources documentation. The Technician supports archaeological, historical, and environmental programs by converting physical records into digital formats, maintaining organized file systems, and ensuring compliance with established data standards and regulatory requirements. 

 

Supervisory Responsibilities: No 

Job Classification:Temporary Call When Needed, Non-Exempt  

Duty Station:Cleveland, TN (Fully onsite)   

Travel:Up to 10% 

 

Duties/Responsibilities:   

  • Scan and digitize physical cultural resources files (reports, site records, maps, and supporting documentation) 

  • Perform Optical Character Recognition (OCR) on scanned documents to enable text searchability 

  • Organize digital files using consistent naming conventions and folder structures 

  • Review documents to ensure completeness, clarity, and proper categorization 

  • Apply basic metadata and indexing to support retrieval and long-term records management 

  • Maintain quality control of scanned documents (legibility, accuracy, completeness, and OCR accuracy) 

  • Coordinate with project staff to ensure alignment with agency file organization standards 

  • Ensure protection of sensitive cultural resource information, including archaeological site location data, in accordance with federal and agency confidentiality requirements (e.g., NHPA Section 304) 

  • Support records management activities in accordance with federal records management policies and applicable standards (e.g., NARA guidelines) 

  • Maintain clear documentation of digitization processes and file tracking to support auditability and project transparency 

  • Support timely completion of contract deliverables through efficient processing and organization of records

Required Skills/Abilities:   

  • Experience working with documents/files in a professional setting (records, data entry, or document control) 

  • Experience using OCR tools or Adobe Acrobat to create searchable PDFs 

  • Basic familiarity with cultural resources documentation (e.g., archaeological reports, Section 106, NEPA) 

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills 

  • Experience working with document management systems, shared drives, or records repositories (e.g., SharePoint or similar platforms) 

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat (PDF management) 

  • Ability to follow established procedures and handle sensitive records appropriately 

 

Education and Experience:   

  • Required:Bachelorsdegree andthree (3)years of relevantemploymentexperience     

  • Required:Experience working in a fast-paced office environment with frequent deadlines 

  • Preferred:Bachelorsdegree andfive (5)years of relevantemploymentexperience     

 

Physical Requirements     

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer    

  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, etc.
