Machine Design Engineer

Job Summary

The Machine Design Engineer will utilize CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) to develop and support manufacturing processes by creating layouts, detailed drawings, assembly diagrams, and technical sketches. This role requires a strong mechanical aptitude, familiarity with engineering principles, and proficiency in mathematical calculations. The engineer will ensure all designs meet manufacturability standards, tolerance requirements, and engineering best practices.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Mechanical Design of Automated Equipment (85%)

  • Utilize SolidWorks CAD software to create and revise detailed production drawings, assembly layouts, and technical schematics.
  • Conduct tolerance stack analyses to determine proper manufacturing tolerances.
  • Design mechanical components and systems, ensuring alignment between materials, functionality, and manufacturability.
  • Develop and maintain an organized database for engineering drawings and documentation.
  • Interpret technical specifications, engineering calculations, and customer requirements to ensure design accuracy.
  • Conduct design reviews and collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Quality Assurance, Sales, and Manufacturing.
  • Work with vendors, customers, and internal teams in design and project review meetings.
  • Troubleshoot fluid power circuits and ensure compliance with safety regulations (OSHA, CE, CSA, etc.).
  • Collaborate with the controls team for safety component selection and system safety compliance.
  • Implement ISO 9001 standards and follow documented engineering procedures.
  • Manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced engineering environment.

Other Responsibilities (15%)

  • Travel for new system start-ups, training sessions, and field service support.
  • Create operating manuals and generate field service reports.
  • Participate in ongoing training and perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficiency in SolidWorks CAD (or similar solid modeling software).
  • Strong knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing) and proper implementation.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and troubleshoot technical drawings, blueprints, and fluid power circuits.
  • Experience in designing for manufacturability with consideration of in-house manufacturing capabilities.
  • Problem-solving skills and ability to work independently or in a team environment.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn new software programs.
  • Understanding of safety standards (OSHA, CE, CSA) and ability to conduct risk assessments.
  • Ethical conduct, self-motivation, and a positive attitude.

Qualifications

  • A.S. or B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • OR 10+ years of hands-on machine design experience in an industrial setting.
