Source is really looking for someone who is comfortable being hands-on and handling the day-to-day tactical HR work. They already have established policies and processes in place, so this role is less about coming in and transforming the department and more about consistently following those procedures, supporting employees, and ensuring everything is handled accurately and appropriately.”
A more casual version for a candidate call:
“They’re really looking for someone who enjoys the tactical, day-to-day side of HR. This isn’t necessarily a role where they need someone to come in and reinvent everything—they want someone who is comfortable working within their established structure, following the existing policies, and executing things consistently.
“Source is looking for someone who is comfortable serving as a resource for employees, but the primary focus of this position is the tactical, day-to-day administration of HR. They need someone who genuinely enjoys payroll, benefits, onboarding, leave administration, maintaining employee records, handling documentation, and making sure established procedures are followed consistently. This is less of a culture-building or strategic leadership position and more of a hands-on HR operations role.”
A more casual version for your phone screens:
“I want to be transparent about what they need because this role is a little different from some traditional HR Generalist positions. Of course, supporting employees is still important, but they really need someone who enjoys the administrative and operational side of HR. The right person will be happy handling payroll, benefits, paperwork, onboarding, compliance, records, and all those day-to-day details. They are not looking for someone to come in and redesign HR or make employee engagement and culture their main focus.”
Then ask:
“Would you say your strengths and interests are more on the hands-on administrative side of HR, or are you ultimately looking for something more focused on employee engagement, culture, and strategic initiatives?”
