About the Opportunity

Franklin Pierce University is seeking a collaborative and people-focused Controller or Finance Manager to join our Finance leadership team. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, this individual will oversee the University's accounting operations while helping support the financial health and long-term success of the institution.

This role is about more than technical accounting expertise. We are looking for someone who enjoys building relationships, mentoring staff, and working closely with colleagues across the University. The ideal candidate is approachable, adaptable, and thrives in a collaborative environment where priorities evolve and teamwork is valued.

What You'll Do

  • Lead and mentor the Accounting, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll teams.
  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations and ensure accurate financial reporting.
  • Prepare monthly and annual financial statements and reports.
  • Manage the University's budgeting process and monitor financial performance.
  • Oversee cash management and debt obligations.
  • Coordinate annual financial audits and serve as the primary audit contact.
  • Prepare tax filings, grant reporting, and other regulatory financial reports.
  • Perform financial analysis to support strategic decision-making.
  • Participate on committees and collaborate with leaders across campus.
  • Identify opportunities to improve financial processes while maintaining a collaborative, service-oriented approach.

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Graduate degree preferred.
  • CPA preferred but not required.
  • Progressive accounting and financial management experience with prior supervisory responsibility.
  • Strong knowledge of budgeting, financial reporting, audits, and accounting operations.
  • Experience leading and developing accounting teams.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office and accounting software.

Highly Preferred Experience

Candidates with experience in higher education are strongly encouraged to apply, as familiarity with the unique financial environment of colleges and universities is highly valued.

We also welcome candidates from nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, healthcare, municipal government, or other mission-driven organizations with comparable financial leadership experience.

Experience with grant accounting is a plus.
