Part-Time Payroll Specialist

Are you an experienced payroll professional looking for a small, consistent part-time schedule where your expertise will be genuinely valued?

Our client, an established construction company, is seeking an experienced Part-Time Payroll Specialist to oversee and process its weekly payroll.

The company recently implemented Miter as its payroll platform and has been successfully operating on the system for approximately nine weeks. They are now looking for an experienced payroll professional who can take ownership of the weekly payroll process, ensure accuracy, identify potential issues, and provide the additional oversight that comes from having someone who truly understands the complexities of construction and union payroll.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced payroll professional, consultant, semi-retired payroll specialist, or someone looking to supplement another part-time position with approximately 5–10 hours of consistent work each week.

The Role

Employees submit their timesheets by Monday morning, making Monday and/or Tuesday availability essential.

You'll be responsible for reviewing payroll information, identifying discrepancies, making sure hours and applicable pay rules are handled correctly, and processing payroll accurately and on time.

This isn't simply a data-entry position.

We're looking for someone who understands payroll well enough to recognize when something doesn't look right and knows what questions to ask before payroll is finalized.

What You'll Do

Your responsibilities will include:

• Oversee and process weekly payroll using Miter for up to 75 employees

• Review employee timesheets submitted by Monday morning

• Verify hours, rates, classifications, and other payroll information for accuracy

• Review and process regular and overtime hours

• Apply appropriate union payroll requirements

• Process payroll involving prevailing wage requirements

• Account for applicable travel time and other job-related compensation

• Review payroll for unusual entries, discrepancies, or potential errors before processing

• Research and resolve payroll discrepancies

• Maintain accurate payroll records and documentation

• Ensure payroll is processed accurately and according to established deadlines

• Coordinate with accounting and internal personnel regarding payroll questions or corrections

• Work with payroll information flowing between Miter and Sage 300

• Help ensure payroll practices are consistent with applicable company, union, and project requirements

• Serve as a knowledgeable payroll resource when questions arise

What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who already has a strong payroll foundation and can work independently with limited supervision.

The ideal candidate will bring:

• Several years of hands-on payroll processing experience

• Experience with construction payroll and/or union payroll

• Knowledge of prevailing wage payroll

• Strong understanding of overtime calculations and requirements

• Experience handling travel time, different pay rates, classifications, or other variable payroll situations

• Strong attention to detail and the ability to identify discrepancies

• Excellent organizational and follow-through skills

• The ability to work independently and meet firm payroll deadlines

• Professional communication skills and good judgment when resolving payroll questions

Highly Preferred

Previous experience with Miter payroll would be particularly valuable.

Experience with Sage 300 is also strongly preferred, particularly experience working in an environment where Sage 300 interfaces with the payroll system.

Candidates with strong construction and union payroll experience who have used other payroll platforms are still encouraged to apply.

Schedule

This is a part-time position requiring approximately 5–10 hours per week. Flexible schedule.

Because employee timesheets are submitted Monday morning and payroll must be processed shortly thereafter, candidates must have consistent availability on Monday and/or Tuesday each week.

This role is best suited for someone specifically seeking a limited but dependable weekly schedule rather than a traditional 20- or 40-hour position.
