The Director of Clinical Education and Development provides strategic leadership and direction for clinical education and professional development initiatives across the organization. This role partners closely with Learning and Development to design, implement, evaluate, and continuously improve high-impact educational programs that enhance clinical documentation, coding accuracy, and overall healthcare delivery.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the creation and maintenance of comprehensive education and training programs, including onboarding, for physicians, clinical documentation specialists, clinical coding analysts, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Developing and delivering internal and external curricula, workshops, and training sessions focused on best practices in clinical documentation improvement (CDI), coding compliance, medical necessity, and regulatory standards.
  • Overseeing training delivery methods (in-person, virtual, blended) and ensuring effective knowledge transfer through innovative instructional design and adult learning principles.
  • Conducting quality assurance reviews, performance assessments, and ongoing monitoring to measure program effectiveness, identify gaps, and drive continuous improvement in clinical documentation and coding practices.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams—including physicians, service line leaders, compliance, HIM/coding, and quality—to align educational efforts with organizational priorities, support service line goals, and promote accurate, complete, and compliant documentation.
  • Contributing to thought leadership by staying current with industry trends, regulatory changes (e.g., CMS guidelines, ICD-10 updates), and evidence-based practices, while fostering a culture of lifelong learning and professional growth.
  • Partnering with key stakeholders to evaluate outcomes, track metrics (such as query rates, DRG accuracy, and documentation quality scores), and implement targeted interventions to elevate clinical and financial performance.
Essential Functions:
1. Educational Program Development & Delivery
o Design and implement comprehensive clinical education programs.
o Develop and maintain educational content for all service lines, ensuring accuracy, 
compliance, and relevance.
o Deliver internal and external training sessions, workshops, and webinars.
 
2. Quality Assurance & Compliance
o Participate in company quality assurance program.
o Monitor and evaluate educational programs for effectiveness and compliance with 
regulatory standards.
o Ensure accuracy and integrity of clinical documentation and coding education.
o Maintain confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA and compliance requirements.
 
3. Leadership & Collaboration
o Chair educational committees and roundtable meetings (e.g., Physician Workflow, PA 
Roundtable).
o Collaborate with Learning and Development and other departments to align education 
initiatives with strategic goals.
o Act as a liaison between clinical teams and organizational leadership to address 
educational needs.
 
4. Content Innovation & Continuous Improvement
o Stay current with industry standards, coding guidelines, and regulatory changes (ICD-10-
CM/PCS, DRGs, HCCs, CPT/E&M).
o Introduce innovative approaches to education delivery, including digital learning 
platforms.
o Contribute ideas for improving methodologies and productivity in educational 
processes.
 
5. Client Engagement & Thought Leadership
o Support client education on documentation accuracy and its impact on coding, profiling, 
and quality outcomes.
o Participate in industry events and speaking engagements to promote organizational 
expertise.
o Provide detailed reports and feedback to clients and internal stakeholders.
 
6. Strategic Support & Service Line Development
o Assist in expanding new consulting services and educational offerings.
o Provide ongoing support for existing programs such as DRG Assurance and staffing 
initiatives.
 
EDUCATION, TRAINING, EXPERIENCE:
• Advanced clinical degree (MD, DO, or equivalent).
• Minimum 5 years of clinical experience.
• Preferred credentials: CCS, CCDS, CRCR, CDIP, HCQM.
• Demonstrated leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
 
HOME OFFICE REQUIREMENTS:
• Must have a quiet and secure space when reviewing protected health information (PHI)
• Computer with high speed internet connection
• Telephone and printer/fax/scanner
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
• This is a full-time position, and general hours of work and days are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. This position may require long hours and occasional weekend work.
• Overall physical workload is light. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing. Sometimes 
work is generally sedentary requiring long periods at work
