Job Title: Safety Director Location: San Francisco, Area CA On-site
The Regional Safety Director is the primary leader responsible for all safety-related functions across the Northern California region. This role has full ownership of safety strategy, compliance, training, incident management, and risk mitigation, with direct authority over all safety programs and personnel in the region. The Director serves as the company’s subject matter expert and primary point of contact for U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) compliance, including FMCSA regulations, ensuring the organization maintains exemplary safety performance and regulatory standing.Key Responsibilities

- Oversee all aspects of safety for the region, including development, implementation, and continuous improvement of comprehensive safety policies, procedures, and programs.
- Maintain full responsibility for DOT compliance, including driver qualification files, hours-of-service compliance, vehicle inspection and maintenance programs, drug and alcohol testing, ELD management, and CSA scores.
- Lead safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments across facilities, fleets, and job sites; identify hazards and drive corrective actions.
- Direct incident investigations, root cause analysis, and reporting (including OSHA 300 logs and DOT-reportable incidents); implement preventive measures to reduce recurrence.
- Design and deliver safety training programs for drivers, field personnel, and management, ensuring alignment with DOT, OSHA, Cal/OSHA, and other applicable regulations.
- Serve as the primary liaison with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies (FMCSA, Cal/OSHA, CHP, etc.) during inspections, audits, and inquiries.
- Monitor and analyze safety metrics, KPIs, and leading indicators; prepare executive-level reports and recommendations to senior leadership.
- Manage a team of safety managers, specialists, and coordinators across the region; provide coaching, performance management, and professional development.
- Stay current on evolving safety and DOT regulations in California and federally; lead proactive updates to company policies and practices.
- Collaborate with Operations, Human Resources, Risk Management, and Legal teams to integrate safety into all business functions.
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Risk Management, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- 10+ years of progressive safety leadership experience, with at least 5 years in a regional or multi-site role.
- Extensive knowledge of FMCSA/DOT regulations and proven track record managing DOT compliance programs.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Director of Safety (CDS), or equivalent certification a plus.
- Experience leading safety programs in transportation, logistics, construction, or related industries.
- Strong understanding of California-specific regulations (Cal/OSHA, Title 8, etc.).
- Demonstrated ability to influence senior leadership and drive change around safety.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Analytical mindset with proficiency in safety management software and data analysis tools.
- Ability to travel regionally as needed (approximately 10–15%).
