KIT Recruitment is partnering with an established retail food business in Durham Region, Ontario to recruit an experienced Retail Butcher Shop Manager to lead their butcher shop team and day-to-day department operations.
This is a hands-on leadership role for someone with a strong background in retail meat/butchery and people management. While butcher knowledge is important, the priority is finding a strong leader who can organize the department, motivate the team, delegate effectively, and take ownership of the overall operation.
Retail Butcher Shop Manager – Details
- Salary: $70,000–$80,000
- Full-time, permanent position
- Approximately 40+ hours per week / 5 days per week
- Weekend availability required, with some scheduling flexibility
Retail Butcher Shop Manager – Responsibilities
- Lead, motivate, and manage the butcher shop team of up to 7 employees
- Organize daily workflow, schedules, and department priorities.
- Delegate responsibilities and ensure tasks are completed effectively.
- Manage ordering, inventory, product rotation, and department supplies.
- Oversee product quality, production, merchandising, and presentation.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness, organization, sanitation, and food safety.
- Train and support employees in meat preparation, product knowledge, customer service, and department procedures.
- Provide excellent customer service and ensure the team delivers a positive customer experience.
- Complete department administrative responsibilities and maintain strong communication with management.
- Identify opportunities to improve department efficiency, organization, and overall performance.
- Work hands-on alongside the team when needed while maintaining overall responsibility for managing the department.
Retail Butcher Shop Manager – Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of relevant butcher, meat-cutting, or retail meat experience.
- 3–5 years of butcher/meat experience combined with leadership or management experience.
- Previous retail butcher shop or meat department experience required.
- Previous leadership or management experience required.
- Strong knowledge of meat products, cutting, preparation, and handling.
- Artisanal butcher experience is an asset but not required.
- Strong leadership, communication, organization, and time-management skills.
- Experience with inventory, ordering, scheduling, and department operations.
- Ability to motivate employees, delegate effectively, and hold team members accountable.
- Strong customer service skills and a positive, professional approach.
- Comfortable working weekends and busy retail periods.
