Botanist
Job Summary
The Botanist is responsible for conducting vegetation surveys, plant inventories, habitat assessments, and biological resource evaluations in support of environmental compliance and natural resource management projects. The Botanist provides technical expertise in plant identification, vegetation community classification, habitat characterization, field data collection, and report preparation. This position supports project teams by documenting botanical resources, assessing potential impacts, and developing recommendations for resource avoidance, conservation, and mitigation.

Duties/Responsibilities

Conduct vegetation inventories, botanical surveys, habitat assessments, and biological resource field investigations.

Identify and document plant species, vegetation communities, wetlands, and other botanical resources within project areas.

Assess the condition, distribution, and significance of vegetation resources and habitats.

Collect, record, and manage field data using GPS, GIS, and other data collection technologies.

Analyze survey data and evaluate potential project impacts to botanical resources.

Prepare technical reports documenting survey methods, findings, vegetation communities, habitat conditions, and recommendations.

Develop recommendations for avoidance, minimization, mitigation, and conservation of sensitive botanical resources.

Prepare and review maps, field documentation, geospatial data, and related project deliverables.

Coordinate field activities with project managers, environmental specialists, survey teams, and stakeholders.

Ensure all field investigations and reports comply with applicable project requirements and professional standards.

Assist with environmental compliance reviews and project planning activities.

Support proposal preparation, project scheduling, and other technical tasks as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities

Advanced knowledge of plant taxonomy, vegetation ecology, and habitat assessment methodologies.

Ability to identify regional flora and vegetation communities in field settings.

Experience with wetland and habitat assessments.

Proficiency with GPS equipment, GIS software, and geospatial data management.

Strong technical writing and data analysis skills.

Ability to work independently in remote field environments.

Excellent organizational and communication skills.
Education and Experience

Required: Bachelor's degree in Botany, Plant Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Natural Resources, or a closely related field.

Required: Minimum five (5) years of professional experience conducting botanical surveys, vegetation inventories, habitat assessments, and environmental field studies.

Required: Current Professional Biological Resource Permit from the Navajo Nation Fish & Wildlife or eligibility to obtain one

Required: Demonstrated experience identifying regional plant species and vegetation communities.

Preferred: Master's degree in Botany, Ecology, Plant Sciences, or a related field.

Preferred: Familiarity with regional flora, vegetation classifications, and environmental compliance requirements.
Physical Requirements/Work Environment

Ability to conduct fieldwork in remote and rugged environments.

Ability to walk long distances over uneven terrain.

Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Ability to lift and carry field equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.

Valid driver’s license and ability to travel for field assignments.
Pre-employment Requirements
