Job Summary 

 Archaeological Technician III provides professional archaeological support for environmental compliance activities associated with electrical transmission lines, substations, and other infrastructure projects throughout the Desert Southwest Region. This position performs archaeological surveys, excavations, cultural resource documentation, artifact processing, and field support while ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, and agency regulations. The technician works independently on routine assignments while supporting project archaeologists and field supervisors during all phases of cultural resource investigations. 

 

Supervisory Responsibilities: No 

Job Classification: Full-Time, Non-Exempt 

Duty Station: Phoenix, AZ  

Travel: Up to 10%  

 

Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Conduct Phase I archaeological surveys, Phase II evaluations, and Phase III data recovery excavations. 

  • Perform archaeological field investigations, including excavation of shovel test pits (STPs), test units, and cultural features. 

  • Document archaeological sites through mapping, measurements, photography, and field notes with minimal supervision. 

  • Identify prehistoric and historic artifacts and cultural features. 

  • Conduct pedestrian surveys using established archaeological methods and techniques. 

  • Monitor construction and heavy equipment operations during ground-disturbing activities. 

  • Establish excavation grids, datums, and excavation units. 

  • Process recovered artifacts through washing, cataloging, labeling, marking, and preliminary analysis. 

  • Prepare archaeological materials for curation. 

  • Perform data entry, scanning, and maintenance of archaeological records. 

  • Complete field and laboratory documentation accurately and completely. 

  • Produce accurate plan-view and profile drawings. 

  • Assist with technical report preparation and documentation. 

  • Support project supervisors with logistics, graphics, writing, field preparation, and travel coordination. 

  • Provide mentoring and leadership to junior archaeological staff during field operations. 

  • Coordinate daily project activities with Crew Chiefs and Project Archaeologists. 

  • Maintain field and laboratory equipment. 

  • Communicate project status and field observations effectively to supervisory personnel.

Required Skills/Abilities 

  • Ability to prioritize multiple assignments and meet project deadlines. 

  • Ability to travel and work overnight as required. 

  • Ability to perform artifact processing, cataloging, labeling, and preliminary analysis. 

  • Skill in maintaining accurate field notes, laboratory records, and electronic data. 

  • Skill in identifying prehistoric and historic artifacts, cultural features, soils, and stratigraphy. 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. 

  • Strong organizational and time management skills. 

  • Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. 

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while also functioning effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team. 

  • Ability to comply with all safety requirements, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and follow federal, agency, and environmental regulations 

 

Education and Experience: 

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a related field. 

  • Required: Minimum of 4 years of field experience preferably in the desert southwest  

  • Required: Valid driver’s license 

  • Required: Proficiency in prehistoric and/or historic archaeology in assigned project regions. 

  • Preferred: Experience with federal cultural resource compliance 

  • Preferred: Desert Southwest archaeological experience 

 

Physical Requirements 

  • Push, pull, lift and carry field equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds. 

  • Work safely in remote locations, rugged terrain, and varying environmental conditions. 

  • Walk long distances over uneven terrain. 

  • Perform strenuous outdoor fieldwork. 

  • Work in extreme heat and varying weather conditions. 

  • Bend, kneel, squat, climb, and stand for extended periods. 

  • Operate four-wheel-drive vehicles. 

  • Travel throughout the Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) Desert Southwest Region
