Job Summary 

The Timber Specialist provides technical oversight and inspection of timber and forestry-related contracts, supporting disaster recovery, restoration, and natural resource management projects for a federal agencyThis role ensures compliance with contract requirements, environmental standards, and forestry best practices throughout project execution.

Job Classification: Full Time 

Duty Station:Ashville, NC (Hybrid, 2 days minimum onsite) 

Travel: Travel up to 75% (Travel required throughout the National Forest in North Carolina) 

Duration: This role is anticipated to last 6 months, with the possibility of extension pending contract options. 

 

Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Review and oversee timber sale and forestry-related contracts and stewardship agreements  

  • Inspect ongoing timber operations (falling, skidding, hauling, loading) for compliance with contract terms  

  • Ensure environmental protection measures (erosion control, stream protection, slash disposal) are properly implemented  

  • Monitor and document contractor performance and operational compliance  

  • Identify deficiencies and implement corrective actions, including enforcement of contract requirements  

  • Coordinate logging plans, road construction, and timber harvesting activities  

  • Review and verify project prerequisites (deposits, schedules, permits, and plans)  

  • Maintain accurate project records, reports, and documentation for timber sales  

  • Coordinate timber activities with other resource programs and Forest Service operations  

  • Support preparation and administration of service contracts and agreements  

  • Conduct field inspections and final project evaluations for contract closeout  

  • Advise contractors on compliance, safety, and operational requirements  

  • Support reporting, invoicing, and progress tracking for timber-related projects

Required Skills/Abilities 

  • Required: Knowledge of forestry operations, timber sale administration, and contract compliance  

  • Required: Understanding of environmental regulations (NEPA, ESA, CWA) and best management practices  

  • Required: Ability to conduct field inspections and evaluate contractor performance  

  • Required: Strong documentation, reporting, and communication skills 

  • Preferred: Experience with timber sale administration on federal lands (USFS preferred)  

  • Preferred: Knowledge of Southern Appalachian Forest ecosystems and forestry practices  

  • Preferred: Experience coordinating multi-resource projects (timber, hydrology, wildlife)  

  • Preferred: Familiarity with GIS tools and forestry data systems 

 

Education and Experience 

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Natural Resources, or related field  

  • Required: Minimum 4 years of experience in forestry, timber management, or related field  

  • Required: Experience in timber operations, inspections, or contract administration  

  • Preferred: Advanced degree in forestry or related field  

  • Preferred: Experience with federal land management agencies, particularly U.S. Forest Service 

 

Physical Requirements 

  • Ability to work in field environments, including logging sites and rugged terrain for extended periods (up to 8 hours/day)  

  • Ability to stand, walk, climb, and navigate uneven terrain and active work sites  

  • Ability to work in extreme weather, noise, dust, and hazardous field conditions  

  • Ability to travel frequently to project locations  

  • Could be moderate lifting (~25–40 lbs) typical for field gear
