Zoologist
Job Summary
The Zoologist provides technical expertise in wildlife biology and ecological assessments in support of biological resource inventories, environmental compliance, and infrastructure development projects. The position is responsible for conducting wildlife surveys, documenting biological resources, collecting and analyzing field data, preparing technical reports, and supporting compliance with Navajo Nation Department of Fish & Wildlife and applicable federal environmental regulations. The Zoologist works collaboratively with project teams to identify potential impacts to wildlife resources and develop appropriate avoidance and mitigation recommendations.

Duty Station: Arizona or New Mexico (Remote Avaliable within those Regions)
Travel: Travel up to 10%
Duties/Responsibilities

Conduct wildlife and habitat surveys for utility, infrastructure, transportation, energy, and environmental projects.

Identify, document, and assess wildlife species, habitats, migration corridors, nesting areas, and other biological resources.

Perform field investigations to evaluate potential project impacts to wildlife resources and sensitive species.

Collect, record, and manage biological field data using GPS and GIS technologies.

Assist in preparing biological resource inventories, technical reports, environmental assessments, and compliance documentation.

Support evaluations of threatened, endangered, and special-status species and their habitats.

Prepare field notes, maps, photographs, and support documentation for project deliverables.

Coordinate with project personnel, survey crews, and regulatory agencies as directed.

Assist with development of avoidance, minimization, and mitigation recommendations to reduce impacts to biological resources.

Ensure field activities are conducted in accordance with project requirements, safety procedures, and applicable environmental regulations.

Support GIS data collection and preparation of files and other mapping deliverables

Required Skills/Abilities

Knowledge of wildlife biology principles, ecological systems, and field survey methodologies.

Ability to identify wildlife species, habitat types, and ecological communities common to the Southwestern United States.

Knowledge of threatened, endangered, and sensitive species survey protocols.

Familiarity with Navajo Nation Department of Fish & Wildlife regulations and procedures preferred.

Working knowledge of federal environmental regulations, including the Endangered Species Act and Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

Proficiency with GPS equipment and GIS software applications.

Strong technical writing, documentation, and data management skills.

Ability to work independently in remote field environments.

Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary project team
Education and Experience
-
Required: Bachelor's degree in Wildlife Biology, Zoology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Natural Resources, or a related field.

Required: Minimum Five (5) years of professional experience

Required: Current Professional Biological Resource Permit from the Navajo Nation Fish & Wildlife or eligibility to obtain one
Physical Requirements

Ability to conduct fieldwork in remote and rugged environments.

Ability to walk long distances over uneven terrain.

Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Ability to lift and carry field equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.

Valid driver’s license and ability to travel for field assignments.

This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, etc.
