Wildlife Project Lead
Job Summary
The Wildlife Project Lead provides technical leadership for wildlife management and habitat restoration projects, supporting disaster recovery and natural resource objectives for a federal agency. This role leads planning, analysis, and implementation of wildlife programs and ensures compliance with environmental regulations.

Job Classification: Permanent; Full-Time
Duty Station: Asheville, NC (Hybrid, 2 days minimum onsite)
Travel: Up to 75% (Travel required throughout the National Forests in North Carolina)
Duration: This role is anticipated to last 6 months, with the possibility of extension pending contract option
Duties/Responsibilities

Lead development and implementation of wildlife and habitat management plans

Review and ensure wildlife projects meet technical standards and management objectives

Coordinate wildlife activities with other resource programs (timber, recreation, fuels)

Plan, organize, and implement wildlife habitat improvement and restoration projects

Conduct and oversee wildlife surveys, monitoring programs, and habitat assessments

Analyze impacts of forest management activities on wildlife populations and habitats

Prepare and review NEPA and ESA documentation, including Environmental Assessments and Biological Assessments

Provide recommendations for mitigation, habitat protection, and resource management decisions

Participate on or lead interdisciplinary teams for project planning and environmental analysis

Monitor program performance and prepare reports with findings and recommendations

Coordinate with agency staff, contractors, and partners on project execution

Support development of annual work plans, budgets, and program priorities

Identify issues and recommend corrective or preventative actions for wildlife resources

Support stakeholder coordination and partnership development

Required Skills/Abilities

Experience preparing and reviewing NEPA and ESA documentation

Ability to lead projects, coordinate teams, and manage multiple priorities

Strong analytical, technical writing, and communication skills

Experience leading wildlife or habitat restoration programs

Familiarity with Southern Appalachian wildlife species and ecosystems
-
Experience working with federal land management agencies

Experience with GIS tools and environmental data analysis
Education and Experience

Required: Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Biology, Wildlife Management, or related field

Required: Minimum 6 years of experience as a wildlife biologist or natural resources professional

Required: Experience in wildlife surveys, habitat analysis, and environmental compliance
-
Preferred: Master’s degree in related field

Preferred: Experience in the Southern Appalachian region or similar ecosystems
Physical Requirements

Ability to work in field environments, including navigating uneven terrain and remote locations for extended periods (up to 8 hours/day)

Ability to stand, walk, and perform fieldwork in rugged conditions
-
Ability to work in extreme weather, noise, dust, heights exceeding 10 feet, noxious odors and outdoor hazards

Ability to travel frequently to project sites

Could have moderate lifting (~25–40 lbs) typical for field gear
