Creole Translator
Job Summary
The Creole Translator/Interpreter is responsible for accurately translating written documents and/or providing real-time interpretation between English and Creole (e.g., Haitian Creole). This role supports effective communication across diverse populations by ensuring language access in a culturally competent and linguistically accurate manner.

Duties/Responsibilities

Translate written materials between English and Creole, including reports, forms, correspondence, and public communications

Provide verbal interpretation (simultaneous or consecutive) during meetings, trainings, interviews, or public events

Ensure translations maintain the original meaning, tone, and context

Review and proofread translated materials for accuracy, grammar, and clarity

Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information and adhere to ethical standards

Collaborate with staff to clarify technical or specialized terminology

Support language access initiatives and assist with culturally appropriate messaging

Maintain glossaries of commonly used terms for consistency
Required Skills/Abilities

Fluency in English and Creole (spoken and written) required

Proven experience in translation and/or interpretation

Strong understanding of grammar, syntax, and cultural nuances in both languages

Ability to handle sensitive or confidential information with discretion

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Attention to detail and high level of accuracy
Education and Experience

Required: High school diploma or GED

Required: Experience in government, emergency management, healthcare, or nonprofit sectors
- Required: ICS and NIMS compliant training (e.g. ICS: 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800)

Preferred: Certification in translation or interpretation (e.g., ATA or equivalent)

Preferred: Familiarity with technical, legal, or medical terminology
Physical Requirements

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer

Ability to listen and speak clearly for extended periods during interpretation sessions

This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, etc.

Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings or weekends, as needed

May require travel or on-demand interpretation support. May involve remote or on-site work depending on assignment
