Job Summary 

The Fisheries/Hydrologist Technician provides technical support for aquatic resource management, including fisheries and watershed projects. This role supports data collection, field surveys, restoration planning, and environmental compliance efforts for a federal agency. 

 

Supervisory Responsibilities: No  

Job Classification: Full Time 

Duty Station:Ashville, NC (Hybrid, 2 days minimum onsite) 

Travel: Travel up to 75% (Travel required throughout the National Forests in North Carolina) 

Duration: This role is anticipated to last 6 months, with the possibility of extension pending contract options. 

 

Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Conduct field surveys of aquatic resources including streams, lakes, and watersheds  

  • Collect, compile, and analyze data on fisheries, hydrology, and habitat conditions  

  • Support planning and implementation of watershed restoration and fisheries improvement projects  

  • Assist in developing restoration priorities and maintaining project inventories  

  • Monitor and evaluate completed restoration and habitat improvement projects  

  • Conduct hydrologic and aquatic assessments, including water quality and stream flow data collection  

  • Support NEPA and ESA processes, including data collection, analysis, and documentation  

  • Assist with preparation of Biological Assessments (BAs) and consultation documentation  

  • Coordinate with engineers and specialists on road, drainage, and aquatic passage projects  

  • Participate in interdisciplinary teams supporting natural resource management  

  • Prepare reports, data summaries, GIS mapping, and technical documentation  

  • Support partnership coordination with federal, state, and local stakeholders  

  • Assist with monitoring programs and environmental studies related to aquatic resources

Required Skills/Abilities 

  • Required: Knowledge of fisheries biology, hydrology, and aquatic resource management principles  

  • Required: Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret environmental and field data  

  • Required: Ability to work independently in field environments and support multiple projects  

  • Required: Strong organizational and communication skills for reporting and coordination 

  • Preferred: Experience conducting aquatic surveys (streams, fisheries, watershed assessments)  

  • Preferred: Familiarity with NEPA, ESA, and CWA compliance processes  

  • Preferred: Experience with GIS tools and spatial data collection  

  • Preferred: Experience with restoration projects or aquatic habitat improvement efforts 

 

Education and Experience 

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries Management, Hydrology, Environmental Science, or related field  

  • Required: Minimu2 years of experience in fisheries, hydrology, or related field  

  • Required: Experience with field data collection and environmental analysis  

  • Preferred: Advanced degree (Master’s) in related field  

  • Preferred: Experience in the Southern Appalachian region or similar ecosystems 

 

Physical Requirements 

  • Ability to stand, walk, and work in rugged outdoor environments for extended periods (up to 8 hours/day)  

  • Ability to navigate uneven terrain, waterways, and remote locations  

  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions, noise, dust, and field hazards  

  • Ability to travel frequently to project sites  

  • Could be moderate lifting (~25–40 lbs) typical for field equipment
