Job Summary 

The Crew Chief (Archaeology) provides cultural resource services for an archaeological monitoring project for a federal client. This role involves ensuring compliance with federal guidelines while monitoring shoreline erosion protection repairs. The successful candidate will be required to meet the professional qualifications standards found in the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualifications Standards and Guidelines for Archaeology and Historic Preservation.

Duty Station: Wister, OK  

Travel: Travel will be required for fieldwork within LeFlore, OK.  

 

Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Conducts on-site archaeological monitoring of shoreline erosion protection repairs to ensure compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.  

  • Identifies and appropriately manage cultural materials, human remains, or other inadvertent discoveries during field activities in accordance with NAGPRA and federal regulations.  

  • Demonstrates avoidance procedures put in place for inadvertent discoveries 

  • Stages of the repair of the shoreline 

  • Creates Maps of the APE for the undertaking 

  • Collaborates with the Contracting Officer's Representative (COR), project managers, and tribal representatives as necessary.  

  • Maintains detailed field notes and prepares a comprehensive Archaeological Monitoring Report, including photographs, maps, and documentation of findings.  

  • Ensures all work is confined to the defined Area of Potential Effect (APE) and avoids any adverse effects to cultural resources.  

 

Required Skills/Abilities 

  • Familiarity with the cultural history of Oklahoma and tribal coordination processes.  

  • GIS proficiency for mapping and documenting archaeological findings.  

  • Demonstrated experience with preparing archaeological monitoring reports, including compliance with Section 106 processes.  

  • Knowledge of NAGPRA and relevant federal, state, and tribal cultural resource policies.  

  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with a variety of stakeholders and project team members.  

  • Proficiency in archaeological survey and excavation methods, including identifying and recording artifacts in a variety of environmental conditions.  

  • Ability to produce clear, detailed, and accurate reports that comply with Section 106 standards and other federal requirements.  

  • Ability to handle disputes or differing opinions diplomatically, particularly when sensitive cultural materials or tribal interests are involved.  

  • Respect for and understanding of tribal customs, cultural materials, and the significance of archaeological sites.  

  • Capability to perform fieldwork in various terrains and weather conditions for extended periods.  

  • Familiarity with field documentation tools like tablets or software for real-time data collection.  

 

Education and Experience 

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in ArchaeologyAnthropology, Cultural Resources or closely related 

  • Required: Minimum of three years of supervisory field experience in archaeological monitoring in general North American archaeology 

  • Required: Meet the professional qualifications standards found in the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualifications Standards and Guidelines for Archaeology and Historic Preservation  

 

Physical Requirements 

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer  

  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, etc.  

  • Lifting requirements – this position may be required to lift up to 30 pounds while conducting fieldwork. 

  • Ability to drive to work sites within LeFlore, Oklahoma.   

  • Ability to walk for moderate distances on varying trail terrains and uneven surfaces in all weather conditions.
