Job Summary 

The Environmental Project Coordinator provides technical expertise in environmental planning and compliance, supporting the development, coordination, and documentation of NEPA analyses for federal agency projects. This role leads document preparation, integrates interdisciplinary inputs, manages project records, and ensures all environmental documentation is accurate, compliant, and legally defensible. 

 

Supervisory Responsibilities: No  

Job Classification: Permanent or Seasonal; Full-Time or Part-Time 

Duty Station: Asheville, NC (Hybrid, 2 days minimum onsite) 

Travel: Up to 75% (Travel required throughout the National Forests in North Carolina) 

Duration: This role is anticipated to last 6 months, with the possibility of extension pending contract options. 

 

Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Lead and coordinate preparation of NEPA documents (EAs, EISs, CEs, decision documents)  

  • Compile, edit, and integrate interdisciplinary specialist reports into cohesive environmental documents  

  • Interpret environmental laws, regulations, and policies to support project compliance  

  • Develop purpose and need statements, alternatives, and effects analyses  

  • Conduct literature reviews, data analysis, and environmental assessments  

  • Support development of mitigation measures and compliance strategies  

  • Manage and maintain the official project record, including documentation, communications, and decision materials  

  • Ensure all records are properly indexed, organized, and compliant with federal agency standard 

  • Process and analyze public comments and stakeholder input  

  • Prepare clear, concise, and accessible technical documents for both technical and public audiences  

  • Ensure consistency with Forest Plans, policies, and regulatory requirements  

  • Support administrative review processes, including objections, appeals, and litigation documentation  

  • Coordinate with project managers, specialists, and agency staff throughout the NEPA process  

  • Maintain data, documentation, and tracking systems for environmental compliance projects  

  • Ensure all deliverables are technically accurate and legally defensible

Required Skills/Abilities 

  • Strong knowledge of NEPA processes, environmental laws, and regulatory compliance 

  • Excellent technical writing, editing, and document integration skills  

  • Ability to synthesize complex interdisciplinary information into clear documentation  

  • Strong organizational skills, including project record management and documentation control 

  • Experience leading or coordinating NEPA documents (EAs, EISs, CEs)  

  • Experience managing project records for federal environmental projects  

  • Familiarity with Forest Service policies, manuals, and planning processes  

  • Experience with GIS, data analysis, and environmental modeling tools 

 

Education and Experience 

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Policy, Natural Resources, Planning, or related field  

  • Required: Minimum 5 years of experience in NEPA compliance, environmental analysis, or related field  

  • Required: Experience preparing or supporting environmental documents and regulatory compliance processes  

  • Preferred: Advanced degree in related field  

  • Preferred: Experience working with federal land management agencies 

 

Physical Requirements 

  • Ability to work in an office or remote environment with standard computer systems  

  • Ability to attend meetings and travel occasionally as required  

  • Ability to communicate effectively in written, virtual, and in-person settings
