Job Summary 

The Botanist Project Manager provides program-level leadership, coordination, and management of ecological and botanical resources in support of a federal agency for disaster recovery, restoration, and resiliency projects. This role oversees planning, budgeting, environmental compliance, and implementation of botanical programs and serves as a key technical advisor and liaison to stakeholders. 

 

Supervisory Responsibilities: No 

Job Classification: Permanent; Full-Time 

Duty Station: Asheville, NC (Hybrid, 2 days minimum onsite) 

Travel: Up to 75% (Travel required throughout the National Forests in North Carolina) 

Duration: This role is anticipated to last 6 months, with the possibility of extension pending contract options. 

 

Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Duties/ResponsibilitiesLead and manage botany and ecology program areas, including planning, coordination, and implementation  

  • Serve as a technical advisor to interdisciplinary teams, leadership, and stakeholders  

  • Develop and recommend policies, strategies, and program plans for restoration and recovery efforts  

  • Oversee program budgets, funding allocations, and annual work plans  

  • Provide expertise on threatened, endangered, and sensitive plant species and ecological systems  

  • Integrate ecological and botanical data into Forest planning and decision-making processes  

  • Conduct and oversee complex field investigations, surveys, and ecological analyses  

  • Prepare and review NEPA and ESA documentation, including Biological Assessments and Evaluations  

  • Participate in interdisciplinary teams for environmental planning, analysis, and decision-making  

  • Develop and maintain partnerships with federal, state, academic, and research organizations  

  • Represent the federal agency at meetings, workshops, and professional forums  

  • Develop training programs and provide technical guidance to staff and partners  

  • Review project plans, environmental documents, and restoration strategies for compliance and effectiveness  

  • Support Forest Plan development, revisions, and monitoring requirements  

  • Manage program data systems, reporting, and documentation

Required Skills/Abilities 

  • Advanced knowledge of botany, plant ecology, and ecosystem management  

  • Extensive experience with NEPA and ESA compliance and environmental analysis  

  • Ability to lead programs, manage budgets, and coordinate interdisciplinary teams  

  • Excellent technical writing, analytical, and communication skills 

  • Experience managing botanical or ecological programs for federal land management agencies  

  • Expertise in Southern Appalachian plant species and ecosystems  

  • Experience developing policies, standards, and programmatic guidance  

  • Experience with GIS tools and ecological data systems 

 

Education and Experience 

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in Botany, Plant Ecology, or related field  

  • Required: Minimu10 years of experience as a botanist or natural resources professional  

  • Required: Demonstrated experience in program management, ecological analysis, and environmental compliance  

  • Preferred: Master’s degree in related field  

  • Preferred: Experience in the Southern Appalachian region or similar ecosystems 

 

Physical Requirements 

  • Ability to conduct field visits and navigate uneven terrain and forested environments  

  • Ability to stand, walk, and work outdoors for extended periods  

  • Ability to work in extreme weather, noise, dust, and field conditions  

  • Ability to travel frequently to project sites and meetings  

  • Could be moderate lifting (~25 lbs) may be expected
