 Job Summary 

The Wildlife Project Manager provides leadership, coordination, and management of wildlife and threatened/endangered species (TES) programs in support of federal agency projects. This role oversees planning, budgeting, environmental compliance, and implementation of wildlife-related initiatives to support disaster recovery and long-term resource management.  

 

Supervisory Responsibilities: No  

Job Classification: Permanent; Full-Time 

Duty Station: Asheville, NC (Hybrid, 2 days minimum onsite) 

Travel: Up to 75% (Travel required throughout the National Forests in North Carolina) 

Duration: This role is anticipated to last 6 months, with the possibility of extension pending contract options.   

 

Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Lead and manage wildlife and TES programs, including planning, coordination, and implementation  

  • Provide technical guidance on wildlife management, habitat planning, and restoration efforts  

  • Develop and review wildlife management and habitat improvement plans to ensure regulatory compliance  

  • Oversee project budgets, funding allocations, and annual program of work  

  • Coordinate project activities with Federal agency staff, contractors, and partners  

  • Participate in and support interdisciplinary teams for environmental planning and analysis  

  • Prepare and revieNEPA and ESA documentation, including Environmental Assessments and Biological Assessments  

  • Monitor and evaluate habitat improvement and wildlife management projects for effectiveness  

  • Conduct and oversee studies on threatened, endangered, and sensitive species  

  • Identify wildlife resource issues and develop solutions or mitigation strategies  

  • Serve as liaison with federal, state, Tribal, and partner organizations  

  • Support development of policies, strategies, and program objectives for wildlife management  

  • Review contractor and partner performance, reporting, and deliverables  

  • Maintain and manage wildlife data, reporting systems, and program documentation

Required Skills/Abilities 

  • Advanced knowledge of wildlife biology, habitat management, and ecosystem processes  

  • Strong experience with NEPA and ESA compliance, including preparation of BA/BE documents  

  • Ability to lead programs, manage budgets, and coordinate multi-disciplinary teams  

  • Excellent technical writing, analytical, and communication skills 

  • Experience managing wildlife or TES programs for federal land management agencies 

  • Familiarity with Southern Appalachian wildlife species and ecosystems  

  • Experience developing programmatic Biological Assessments (Section 7 ESA)  

  • Experience with GIS tools and environmental data systems 

 

Education and Experience 

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Biology, Wildlife Management, or related field  

  • Required: Minimu10 years of experience as a wildlife biologist or natural resources manager  

  • Required: Demonstrated experience in wildlife program management, habitat analysis, and environmental compliance  

  • Preferred: Master’s degree in related field  

  • Preferred: Experience in the Southern Appalachian region or similar ecosystems 

 

Physical Requirements 

  • Ability to conduct field visits and navigate uneven terrain and forested environments  

  • Ability to stand, walk, and work outdoors for extended periods  

  • Ability to work in extreme weather, noise, dust, and field conditions  

  • Ability to travel frequently to project sites and meetings
