Job Summary 

A Wildland Fire Consultant leverages extensive public agency fire management experience to support wildfire mitigation planning. The role focuses on risk assessments, CWPP and WMP development, and stakeholder engagement, translating field-tested wildfire operations into actionable strategies that strengthen community resilience and regulatory compliance. 

 

Job Classification: Seasonal; Part-Time 

Duty Station:California (Statewide) 

Travel: Up to 25% based on business needs to client sites  

Compensation  

  • $50.00 – $62.50 per hour 

  • FLSA Non-Exempt  

 

Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Conduct wildfire risk and hazard assessments for communities and utilities 

  • Develop and update Community Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPPs) and Wildfire Mitigation Plans (WMPs) 

  • Advise on fuels management strategies and Home Ignition Zone (HIZ) practices 

  • Provide technical review of wildfire mitigation projects and planning documents 

  • Facilitate stakeholder meetings, workshops, and public engagement sessions 

  • Support interagency coordination with local, state, tribal, and federal partners 

  • Prepare GIS-informed maps, models, and decision-support tools for planning efforts 

  • Ensure compliance with HFRA, FEMA, state, and utility wildfire planning standards 

Required Skills/Abilities 

  • Demonstrated expertise in wildfire mitigation planning (CWPPs, WMPs, or equivalent) 

  • Strong understanding of fire behavior, fuels management, and HIZ principles 

  • Ability to conduct wildfire risk and hazard assessments using GIS and related tools 

  • Proven record of interagency coordination and stakeholder engagement 

  • Excellent technical writing and presentation skills 

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and utility wildfire planning standards (HFRA, FEMA, etc.) 

  • Ability to translate operational fire experience into actionable planning strategies 

 

Education and Experience 

  • Required: Minimum 10 years of experience in wildland fire management with a public agency 

  • Preferred: Bachelor’s of Science in forestry, fire science, rangeland management, wildlife ecology or a related field  

 

Physical Requirements 

For example:  

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer 

  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, etc.
