This position is responsible for creating accurate mechanical designs, drafts, and layouts for specialty vehicle upfit projects. The Mechanical Designer develops both custom and standardized solutions using SolidWorks and CAD tools to support internal teams and external customers. Responsibilities include supporting sales and production teams, developing new products, improving existing designs, and maintaining work instruction and product design libraries.

This role collaborates closely with cross-functional teams, including sales, supply chain, and production to ensure designs meet customer specifications while supporting product development and manufacturing requirements. The position reports to the Supply Chain Manager and plays a key role in delivering high-quality engineering documentation and manufacturable designs.

Duties:
Including but not limited to:
  • Generate and review technical documentation for internal staff and external customers.
  • Create comprehensive documentation for mechanical designs and product layouts.
  • Participate in value engineering activities on standard and custom builds to improve cost efficiency and increase gross profit.
  • Ensure adherence to standard operating procedures within supply chain management functions of the order management system.
  • Review engineering documentation for accuracy, quality, and completeness.
  • Maintain and update published engineering documentation.
  • Collaborate with sales, supply chain, and production teams to ensure designs meet customer specifications and manufacturing requirements.
  • Apply established drafting and CAD standards to all design work.
  • Conduct tests and experiments related to product development and design validation.
  • Collect data, record results, and prepare test reports.
  • Develop and document testing procedures.
  • Assist with new product development and prototype builds.
  • Improve existing products based on management priorities and customer feedback.
  • Analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve mechanical design issues.
  • Develop both conceptual designs and finalized manufacturable designs.
  • Maintain and periodically review a library of standard upfit designs and layouts using customer feedback for improvements.
  • Support customer needs across specialty vehicle product lines such as ToughLite, Vans, Fleets, or Metro, or a combination of these areas.
  • Maintain strong working knowledge of ERP systems such as WorkWise.
  • Organize and catalog all drawings within a centralized and structured filing system.
  • Maintain strong product knowledge of both standard and custom products offered.
  • Approach internal requests and design challenges with a proactive, solutions-focused mindset.
  • Participate in pre-build and post-build meetings with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment on customer expectations.
  • Track and remain accountable to performance metrics and continuous improvement initiatives.

Skills and Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 5 years of mechanical design or CAD design experience in a manufacturing, product development, or specialty vehicle environment.
  • SolidWorks and/or AutoCAD experience required.
  • NTEA 101 and NTEA 201 certifications required.
  • ASE E1, E2, and/or E3 certifications encouraged but not required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage design responsibilities with minimal supervision.
  • Proven experience developing manufacturable mechanical designs from concept through production.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to establish and maintain drafting standards, drawing libraries, and structured design documentation.
  • Ability to help organize and improve design processes and documentation systems within the department.
  • Interest in supporting the development and growth of the design and drafting function, with potential opportunities for future leadership as the team expands.
