Assistant Controller - privatelt held, middle market construction company

A well-established, award-winning, privately held construction organization is hiring an Assistant Controller to support the next phase of its growth. This is a hands-on role for an accounting professional who enjoys owning the day-to-day, improving processes, and bringing structure to a fast-moving environment. The company needs a strong accounting leader who can step in, partner closely with the CFO, and help mature the accounting function as the business scales.

Responsibilities 

• Serve as the operational backbone of the accounting function
• Own day-to-day accounting operations including general ledger, close, and reporting
• Ensure accurate job cost coding of invoices, labor, and project expenses
• Improve visibility into project-level profitability
• Partner with operations to strengthen reporting and forecasting inputs
• Support AR and collections in a lean, fast-paced environment
• Oversee sales and use tax compliance
• Drive standardization of accounting processes that have not kept pace with growth
• Help modernize workflows while navigating natural resistance to change
• Lead, mentor, and develop a young accounting team
• Wear multiple hats and adapt quickly as priorities shift

Requirements 

• Construction or project-based accounting experience with job cost exposure
  • OR strong Accounting Manager experience from a controlled environment with the ability to learn job cost quickly
• Solid understanding of core accounting fundamentals including debits, credits, and reconciliations
• Experience with construction accounting systems; Viewpoint experience is a strong plus
• Practical, hands-on, and solutions-oriented mindset
• Comfortable in fast-paced environments where every day looks different
• Someone who wants to stay in-seat for several years and build something sustainable
• Knows what “good” looks like but is patient and thoughtful about change
