Staff Backend / Platform Engineer

Full-Time | Hybrid | New York City or Austin

We're looking for a seasoned Backend/Platform Engineer to help build the foundation of a new, API-driven platform that simplifies how money moves through a complex, high-stakes domain. You’ll work across systems that touch everything from external developer APIs to internal transaction orchestration—laying the groundwork for reliable, secure, and scalable services as we grow.

What You’ll Do

  • Design and build core backend services that power mission-critical money movement workflows

  • Own external-facing APIs and webhook infrastructure used by partners and third parties

  • Drive integration with external services and internal platforms to ensure clean, reliable data flows

  • Collaborate across product and engineering to build abstractions that balance flexibility with simplicity

  • Operate in a fast-paced, collaborative environment with high standards and low ego

  • Help scale our system from first tens of millions to hundreds of millions in volume

  • Contribute to architectural decisions, dev tooling, and API reliability from day one

What We’re Looking For

  • 8+ years of backend or platform engineering experience, ideally in fast-paced or startup environments

  • Strong experience building and scaling REST APIs and webhook systems

  • Experience with transactional systems, reconciliation, or multi-service workflows (e.g. payments, event processing)

  • Proficiency in modern backend stacks (e.g., TypeScript, Node.js, Ruby on Rails, PostgreSQL)

  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure (AWS), containerized apps, CI/CD workflows, and systems monitoring

  • Strong testing practices and experience with GraphQL or WebSocket APIs is a plus

  • Clear communicator, collaborative mindset, and thoughtful decision-making in ambiguity

  • Comfortable working onsite 3–5 days/week in either New York City or Austin

Nice to Have

  • Background in fintech, infrastructure, or developer-facing platforms

  • Experience with data integrity, retry logic, or secure integration handling

  • Interest in shaping product decisions as well as platform direction

  • A track record of building from 0→1 with clean abstractions and well-documented systems

This is a high-impact opportunity to work on foundational systems without legacy baggage, in a collaborative, high-trust team. If you’re excited to build critical infrastructure from the ground up—and want your work to matter day one—this role is for you.
